We are seeking an experienced and visionary Director of Software Engineering to lead software engineering teams, drive technical excellence, and oversee the successful delivery of scalable, high-quality software solutions. This role requires strong engineering leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to align technology execution with business objectives.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in software architecture, engineering management, Agile delivery, technical strategy, team development, and large-scale software delivery. You will play a critical role in building high-performing engineering teams, improving development practices, managing technical initiatives, and ensuring the successful execution of complex software projects.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Engineering Leadership & Technical Strategy
- Lead and manage multiple software engineering teams responsible for designing, developing, testing, and delivering high-quality software products.
- Define and execute engineering strategies aligned with company goals, product vision, and technology roadmaps.
- Establish engineering standards, development methodologies, coding practices, and technical governance frameworks.
- Drive software architecture decisions, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with business requirements.
- Collaborate with CTO, Product, Architecture, QA, DevOps, and Business teams to define technical priorities and delivery strategies.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineering managers, architects, and senior engineers.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and engineering practices to improve productivity and innovation.
- Ensure engineering teams follow industry best practices, including Agile development, CI/CD, automation, code quality, and DevOps principles.
- Promote a culture of engineering excellence, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Act as a strategic technology advisor for engineering initiatives and organizational growth.
2. Software Delivery & Engineering Operations
Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of multiple software development initiatives.
Ensure engineering teams consistently deliver high-quality software within defined timelines and business priorities.
- Establish engineering metrics and performance indicators to monitor delivery efficiency, quality, and team productivity.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges, and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Partner with Project Managers and Product Owners to ensure successful execution of product development initiatives.
- Improve software development processes, workflows, and operational efficiency across engineering teams.
- Drive adoption of modern engineering practices such as Test-Driven Development (TDD), Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment, and automated testing.
- Ensure effective collaboration between Software Engineering, QA, DevOps, Security, Product, and Business teams.
- Monitor engineering capacity, resource allocation, and workload distribution across teams.
- Support planning and prioritization of engineering initiatives based on business impact and technical requirements.
3. Engineering Team Management & Talent Development
- Build, mentor, and develop high-performing software engineering teams.
- Lead engineering managers, team leads, senior engineers, and technical specialists.
- Define team structures, roles, responsibilities, and career development paths.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies for engineering talent.
- Evaluate technical skills and participate in hiring decisions for software engineers, architects, and contract engineering resources.
- Conduct performance reviews using structured feedback processes and engineering KPIs.
- Coach engineering leaders to improve technical decision-making, team management, and delivery capabilities.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning.
- Establish mentoring programs and technical growth initiatives across engineering teams.
- Encourage engineers to adopt best practices in software design, coding standards, testing, and system reliability.
4. Architecture, Quality & Engineering Excellence
Partner with architects and senior engineers to define scalable software architecture and technical solutions.
Ensure engineering teams follow secure coding practices and software quality standards.
- Establish processes for code reviews, technical documentation, testing strategies, and release management.
- Drive improvements in system performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
- Promote automation across development, testing, deployment, and operational processes.
- Ensure engineering teams maintain strong technical documentation and knowledge management practices.
- Identify opportunities to reduce technical debt and improve long-term platform sustainability.
- Collaborate with Security and Infrastructure teams to maintain compliance and operational reliability.
5. Stakeholder Collaboration & Business Alignment
- Serve as a key communication bridge between engineering teams, executive leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders.
- Translate business objectives into technical strategies and actionable engineering initiatives.
- Provide regular updates on engineering progress, risks, technical challenges, and delivery outcomes.
- Collaborate with Product Management to define technical feasibility, timelines, and implementation strategies.
- Partner with executive leadership on technology investments, resource planning, and engineering growth initiatives.
- Support strategic decision-making through technical insights, data analysis, and engineering metrics.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external technology partners.
6. Contractor & Resource Management
- Evaluate and approve the need for contract software engineers based on project requirements and business priorities.
- Collaborate with Talent Acquisition and staffing partners to identify qualified engineering resources.
- Review technical requirements, candidate profiles, and skill alignment for contract positions.
- Manage engineering resource planning to ensure teams have the required capabilities and capacity.
- Ensure effective onboarding, integration, and performance management of contract engineering resources.
- Optimize engineering workforce strategy through a balance of full-time employees and external technical resources.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience in engineering leadership and management roles.
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams and managing large-scale software development initiatives.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, cloud technologies, and modern engineering practices.
- Experience with Agile methodologies, Scrum, DevOps, CI/CD, and software delivery frameworks.
- Strong leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and strategic planning skills.
- Experience managing engineering managers, team leads, and senior technical professionals.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), engineering processes, and quality standards.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is preferred.
- Ability to analyze technical challenges and make effective business-aligned decisions.
- Experience with engineering tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, or similar platforms.
- Experience managing distributed or global engineering teams is highly preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to operate in a fast-paced technology environment.
