About The Role
We are looking for a Software Engineering Team Lead to join our Eight Mile Plains team. This position encompasses both management and technical/design responsibilities. It is responsible for the supervision of a small team and duties are notionally split at approximately 70% technical/design and 30% management. Responsibilities in both aspects of the role are articulated separately below.
What The Role Will Involve
Key Supervisor Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision, guidance and mentoring to a small team of Application Software Engineers
- Instill a sense of urgency within the Application Software Engineering team with a focus on delivery
- Prioritise and escalate actions in response to project demands requiring Application Software Engineering input.
- Own the application software development schedule and reporting to project/customer stakeholders.
- Monitor resource loading within the Application Software Engineering team and report issues to the Software Engineering Group Lead.
- Approve leave forms for people within the Application Software Engineering team, after consultation with the Project Manager/s
- Provide technical mentoring and leadership for the designs produced by team members.
- Support the Software Engineering Group Lead in conduct of Performance Management of the Group through:
- Providing performance feedback on and identifying career development needs for direct reports.
- Reviewing the goals of direct reports for alignment with organisational direction.
- Assume part responsibility for ensuring adherence of the Application Software Engineering team to all company Quality processes and procedures in support of AS9100 accreditation.
- Contribute to project and departmental Risk Management activities
- Identify tools (incl. S/W) and equipment to improve capability and efficiency and generate CAPEX proposals, incl. justifications
- Take responsibility for large and complex areas of the software architecture for multiple software systems
- Ownership of software development schedule and reporting to project/customer stakeholders
- Develop modular, readable and robust code for defence systems adhering to security and functional requirements in Python, JavaScript, Typescript/React and C++
- Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, systems design, agile development, review, test-driven development, integration, and verification
- Presenting design details during customer reviews to a mix of participants with and without software engineering knowledge
- Collaborate effectively with both software and other engineering disciplines as well as management, to ensure comprehensive coverage of requirements as efficiently as possible
- Mentor less experienced software engineers in best practice techniques for development and debugging
- Write and maintain both internal and deliverable documentation, either directly or through supervision of contractors
- Provide Engineering support to manufacturing as required
- Participate in demo activities for the purpose of sharing knowledge
- Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar.
- An active Commonwealth Security clearance
- 7+ years’ experience in similar role
- Experience architecting complex software, adhering to requirements, with a structured verification approach
- Proven experience as a Software Engineer with a comprehensive project portfolio
- Hands-on experience with unit/integration testing, comprehensive documentation, API design and development
- Familiarity with Python; C++ and TypeScript/JavaScript
- Ability to work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, adhering to development processes
- Comfortable with Source Control and CI/CD systems.
- Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum/Kanban)
- Background or strong understanding in UI/UX design and principles.
- Exposure to or hands-on experience with DevOps practices and toolchains.
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Ability to read, interoperate, and understand lower-level code in C or C++.
- Experience working in distributed, secure, or high-availability system environments.
