Indexed description
Working at Alden Scientific
We are transforming health and longevity by prioritizing individuals, not averages. Our platform
harnesses multi-omic data and AI to provide predictive, personalized health
management—making proactive health management the new normal.
About the Role
We are looking for a Manager of Engineering to lead and scale our technical foundation as
Alden Scientific grows. This role reports directly to the President and Chief Business Officer of
Alden Scientific. In this role, you will oversee our technology architecture end-to-end—from
research infrastructure through production systems—while ensuring engineering excellence
across cloud, data, DevOps, and front-end domains. You will work both hands-on and through a
team of partners and contractors, building prototypes and deploying production solutions. This is
a central management and coordination role, overseeing our technology roadmap and building
systems that power the future of personalized health.
Location
This management role will be a hybrid in-office / remote position based in Cambridge, MA. Occasional travel may also be required.
What You’ll Do
Management and Coordination
• Oversee Alden’s technology architecture, from research infrastructure to production
systems.
• Create, maintain, and communicate the company’s technology roadmap, aligned to
business and scientific goals.
• Oversee all engineering components, roles, responsibilities, and contract
teams—including cloud/AWS, DevOps, data engineering, and front-end engineering.
• Oversee data management systems and policies.
• Serve as a service-oriented engineering leader, balancing hands-on technical work with
coordination through external partners and contractors.
• Address the company’s evolving IT-related needs as we scale.
• Define and champion a culture of engineering excellence, establishing team norms,
code quality standards, and review practices.
• Design our future engineering strategy, guiding our build, partner, and buy decisions.
Architecture & Technology
• Set, formalize, and enforce data and technology architecture standards across all
stakeholders and systems.
• Adapt scientific prototypes into engineered, production-ready solutions—bridging the
gap between research and engineering.
• Oversee front-end engineering standards.
• Define and document APIs and interfaces between systems.
• Ensure information security and identity management best practices are embedded
across all systems.
• Oversee information security, disaster recovery planning, data backup strategies, and
system resilience to ensure business continuity. Define and enforce policy standards
across platforms.
Stakeholder Management & Delivery
• Collect and manage requirements from all key stakeholders, including research, product,
and modeling teams.
• Drive engineering projects forward, removing blockers and ensuring timely delivery.
• Manage partnerships and contracts with engineering vendors and service providers.
• Establish lightweight project tracking and delivery processes appropriate for a start-up
environment (e.g., sprint planning, status reporting).
• Communicate technical tradeoffs and project status clearly to leadership and
stakeholders.
What We’re Looking For
• BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, or a related field.
• At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills; able to work effectively with scientists,
product managers, and business stakeholders.
• Service-oriented leadership style—you prioritize the needs of your team and the
organization.
• Coding background, with Python preferred.
• Experience with AI-powered development tools such as Claude and Cursor for coding,
engineering, and technology tasks.
• Project management experience, including working with external vendors and
contractors.
• Solid experience with AWS (S3, EC2, IAM) and cloud infrastructure management.
• Familiarity with DevOps principles and tooling (CI/CD pipelines, containerization,
infrastructure-as-code).
Experience with relational and non-relational databases.
• Systems and platform management experience.
• Genuine passion for making a difference in human health.
• Demonstrated experience managing and coordinating multiple concurrent technical
workstreams or projects.
• Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-moving start-up environments with limited
resources.
• Experience managing healthcare/patient data.
• Familiar with HIPAA and GDPR privacy regulations and standards.
