Shopify Technical Specialist
Indexed description
Who I'm looking for
- 2+ years hands-on with Shopify and its app ecosystem. You've lived in the admin.
- You know how apps inject themselves into themes, how metafields work, what breaks when apps overlap.
- Bonus for Rebuy, Klaviyo, Recharge, review apps (Okendo/Judge.me/Stamped), or loyalty apps.
- You figure things out. This is the most important line in this post. You will regularly be asked to configure apps you've never touched.
- The expectation is that you read the docs, poke the settings, test in a safe environment, and come back with it done — or with a specific, researched question ("the app can't do X natively; here are two workarounds, which do you prefer?").
- If your instinct when stuck is to ask "what should I do?" this role will make us both miserable.
- You verify your own work. "Done" means checked, not just clicked.
- If you migrate 1,400 reviews, you tell me how you confirmed all 1,400 arrived.
- Strong written English, and conversational spoken English — enough for an occasional call or screen-share walkthrough. Day-to-day communication is written.
- Async-first — most communication is Slack tickets and written updates.
- Some working-hours overlap with US Pacific time for same-day questions.
Projects
Commerce Theory is a technical ecommerce consultancy based in California. We manage the Shopify, Klaviyo, and app stacks for a roster of US DTC and CPG brands — food, wellness, supplements, and consumer goods — as their outsourced technical team.
This is one specific role on our team: Shopify Technical Specialist, reporting directly to the founder. You'll work from our internal ticket queue executing well-specified technical tasks on the stores we manage — app configuration, store-to-store migrations, loyalty/reviews setup, Klaviyo segment changes, and QA. Every ticket has a defined outcome; how you get there is up to you. No account managers, no layered approvals, no pointless meetings.
We're async-first and ticket-based, with AI tools (Claude) as a core part of the workflow — you should be excited about that, not threatened by it. Strong performance grows into more hours, broader scope, and a senior technical seat on our team.
What you'll do
You'll get tickets, not vague requests. Every task comes with a clear definition of done. Examples of real work from my queue:- Replicate a Rebuy Smart Cart configuration from one store to another, matching styling and rules exactly
- Set up a new loyalty + reviews stack on a store in a non-live state, ready for launch review
- Migrate all reviews from one app to another and verify the counts match — prove nothing was lost
- Adjust Klaviyo sending segments per spec, and confirm downstream flows still reference the right segments
- QA app configurations across storefronts, document discrepancies
What you get
- Hourly $16–28 USD, independent contractor, invoice-based
- Hours that grow with performance, across a portfolio of our clients
- Direct work with a senior operator
- Fully async and remote: you set your own schedule, work from anywhere
- Clearly specified tasks, fast feedback, and pay that reflects skill, not seat time
- Paid at your full rate from the test task onward — we never ask for free work
Optional Skills
- Direct experience with our common apps: Rebuy, Recharge, Klaviyo, review platforms (Okendo, Judge.me, Stamped), or loyalty apps
- Shopify Flow and native automations
- Shopify Admin API / GraphQL for scripted checks and bulk operations
- GA4 and Meta pixel/CAPI familiarity — enough to verify tracking survived a change
- Prior agency or multi-store experience — you're comfortable context-switching between brands
- Hands-on use of AI coding/research tools (Claude, Cursor, etc.) in real work
- Comfortable with basic HTML/CSS/Liquid (theme-level edits, not app development). JavaScript a plus.
