The Project Controls Specialist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and analyzing integrated project schedules while also supporting cost control, budgeting, and forecasting activities for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects. This role works closely with engineering, procurement, vendor, construction, and project management teams to build logic-driven schedules, track progress and cost performance, identify critical path and schedule risks, and provide accurate, data-driven reporting to support project decision-making. This is a hybrid schedule-and-cost role, with schedule development and critical path analysis as the primary focus, complemented by hands-on cost control and reporting responsibilities. The ideal candidate has hands-on expertise in Primavera P6 and a solid understanding of EPC project execution, including large scale industrial projects such as process plants, low carbon infrastructure projects, and carbon reduction projects.

The Project Controls Specialist will report to the Project Controls Manager or Project Manager depending on project assignment. Location is in our Greenville SC office.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain integrated Level 3/Level 4 project schedules in Primavera P6 covering engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning activities.
  • Build and validate schedule logic, durations, and resource/cost loading in coordination with discipline leads and subcontractors.
  • Establish and manage schedule baselines; track progress and update schedules on a regular cycle.
  • Perform critical path analysis, identify schedule risks and constraints, and recommend recovery or mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare schedule performance reports, including progress curves (S-curves), earned value metrics, look-ahead schedules, and variance analysis for project leadership and clients.
  • Support progress measurement systems, including quantity tracking, weighting, and rules of credit.
  • Coordinate with procurement to incorporate vendor/supplier delivery dates and long-lead equipment milestones into the master schedule.
  • Conduct schedule risk assessments and support what-if/scenario analysis for change orders, delay claims, and schedule recovery plans.
  • Facilitate schedule review meetings with project team members, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Support development and maintenance of project cost budgets, forecasts, and control estimates in coordination with the project controls and finance teams.
  • Track committed costs, actual costs, and accruals against budget by work breakdown structure (WBS) and cost code.
  • Analyze cost and schedule variances (including earned value metrics such as CPI/SPI) and report root causes and corrective actions.
  • Support change management processes, including evaluating cost and schedule impacts of proposed changes and trends.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting and monitor vendor/subcontractor commitments against approved budgets.
  • Support project close-out by compiling as-built schedules and lessons-learned documentation.
  • Collaborate with project controls staff on integration between cost, schedule, and progress reporting systems.

Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Planner/Scheduler on industrial EPC or heavy industrial construction projects.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Primavera P6 including schedule development, resource/cost loading, and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of EPC project phases, including engineering deliverables, procurement cycles, and construction sequencing.
  • Working knowledge of Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling principles and schedule risk analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting; familiarity with Power BI or similar tools a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with engineering, construction, and client teams.
  • Experience supporting progress measurement and earned value management (EVM) systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in renewable energy, industrial process, chemical, or heavy manufacturing projects.
  • PMI-SP (Project Management Institute Scheduling Professional) or AACE Planning & Scheduling Professional (PSP) certification.
  • Experience with schedule risk analysis tools (e.g., Primavera Risk Analysis, Safran, Deltek Acumen).
  • Familiarity with contract and claims-related schedule analysis (delay/impact analysis).

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and construction site environments; site visits may be required for planning, validation of schedule assumptions, and progress tracking.
  • May require extended hours during critical project phases.
  • Must be able to comply with site-specific safety requirements and use appropriate PPE when on active construction or industrial sites.
