Staff Software Engineer

Who You AreAs a Staff Software Engineer at Justworks, you will leverage your demonstrated ability to own and lead the implementation of features in large-scale, distributed applications to support the long term growth of Justworks. You understand the concept of “separation of concerns” and have leveraged design patterns to solve technical challenges. You spend significant amounts of time directly assisting and leveling up other engineers. You look for signals in the noise, and can detect and resolve issues before they become problems.
You will work closely with senior engineers to scope, design, and build new features and functionality in this area. As a staff engineer, your responsibilities also include coordinating and participating in engineering efforts across teams, including scalability, performance, and modularization efforts. You will work primarily in Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React, but may employ other technologies where appropriate. You should have a deep understanding of technology that goes beyond the ability to use these tools.

- Provide crucial technical expertise, introduce new best practices to the team, drive consistency across all teams, and help prioritize features to increase our client impact
- Drive the strategy, architecture, and execution of end-to-end systems, working directly with client stakeholders and our internal delivery teams
- Able to step in to represent your Director or Mission in technical leadership discussions and decision in front of other leaders and cross-functional partners
- Partner with delivery and executive stakeholders to scope, design, and lead implementation of AI-driven solutions
- Foster external relationships and presence, helping to build our employment brand as a talent attractor
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, product managers, and designers
- Design system architecture from the ground up, write lots of code, and mentor a small team of engineers
- Own the technical direction of an evergreen initiative operating as a start-up
- Build features and functionality that our customers use directly, typically in an iterative fashion taking into account user feedback
- Leverage your MVP mindset to create iterative milestones
- Lead complex projects or changes that will benefit the entire organization
- Keep our code healthy and follow good practices, and motivate other engineers to do the same
- Provide guidance and support growth in other engineers across multiple teams

- Guide the team in defining technical requirements and solutions that drive projects through to completion

Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of professional hands-on experience
- Demonstrable experience leading engineers without formal direct reporting relationships
- Expertise in either Ruby on Rails or React; we expect staff candidates to leverage a diverse skill set beyond these tools
- Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design
- Experience proactively collaborating across different engineering teams
- Experience working with complicated systems at scale
- Experience building APIs and/or webhooks

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is between $240,000.00 - $310,000.00 USD.
Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including and not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location. Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
