AI Engineer (Defence)

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne


About the Company

Our client is a high performing technical consultancy delivering data, AI and software solutions across the defence, financial services and private capital sectors. They specialise in solving complex technical challenges within highly demanding environments. Based in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, they are growing rapidly and are looking to hire exceptional engineers at all levels.


The Role

We are looking for AI Engineers to develop impactful AI solutions within the defence sector. This is a hands on engineering role where you'll contribute across a broad range of AI projects, from early stage Proofs of Concept (PoCs) through to fully engineered production solutions and applied research supporting future defence capabilities.


Responsibilities

  • Deliver AI solutions across a variety of projects, from PoCs to production systems.
  • Provide technical expertise within project teams and client engagements.
  • Adapt to evolving business priorities and contribute where needed.
  • Share knowledge and help develop technical capability across the engineering team.


What We're Looking For

  • Strong understanding of core AI and Machine Learning concepts.
  • Experience working with machine learning models at an algorithmic level, rather than purely using off the shelf models.


Experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • AI safety and security
  • Edge AI / low power AI
  • Explainable AI
  • Robust AI for contested environments
  • Novel learning techniques
  • Agentic AI
  • Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and LLM integration
  • Multimodal AI (text, image, audio, etc.)
  • Excellent programming skills, particularly in Python.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with a passion for knowledge sharing.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous environments while maintaining a structured, outcome focused approach.
  • Strong academic background, typically a 2:1 or First Class degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning or a related discipline.
  • Experience within defence or national security is advantageous.
