The Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IPA) at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) conducts research into the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the ground up to 120 kilometres altitude.

What To Expect

The Applied Meteorology Department conducts research on thunderstorms, wake vortices, noise, wind energy, gravity waves, and turbulence. On the one hand, the goal is to understand and predict the relevant dynamic processes in the boundary layer and the upper atmosphere. On the other hand, the department develops analysis and forecast products tailored for aviation and wind energy, bringing them to the point of practical application. The goal of this position is to advance the development of very short-term thunderstorm forecasts (nowcasting) from the academic research stage to practical application in the innovative air mobility. To this end, adjustments will be made to existing forecasting tools, particularly with regard to the requirements of innovative air mobility, such as the spatiotemporal resolution, forecast horizon, and technical usability.

Your tasks

Advancement of short-term thunderstorm forecasts to the innovative air mobility, bringing academic research to practical application:

  • Application-oriented further development and technical execution of thunderstorm forecasts
  • Expansion of the available thunderstorm forecasting tools to an integrated software package

Your profile

  • Completed university degree (Bachelor's/University of Applied Sciences) in computer science, scientific computing, data science, or a comparable field
  • Interest in the (innovative) air mobility, atmospheric physics (particularly thunderstorms)
  • Proven, long-standing experience in computer science, scientific computing, data science, or a comparable field
  • Excellent knowledge of Python programming
  • In-depth knowledge of software engineering, including tools
  • Extensive experience in machine learning
  • Good written and spoken English

Depending on qualifikation and assignment of tasks, remuneration will be up to pay grade EG12 TVöd Bund.
