Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue further academic qualifications outside of their work responsibilities.
Your core responsibility is to pursue your research project. You will actively contribute to the cluster’s interdisciplinary Graduate School and collaborative research activities. Activities include participation in research meetings, organising scholarly events and developing relevant networks.
About the project: X-ray imaging is a non-invasive technique that allows to investigate the inner structure of samples without destructive sample preparation. However, certain writings composed of carbon-based inks are often difficult to separate from their support and require more advanced X-ray analytical methods. The aim of the project is to investigate the applicability of X-ray phase-contrast imaging to enhance the X-ray optical contrast required to visualize writings using carbon-based inks in layered structures, such as bookbinding boards, mummy cartonnage, or damaged compact stacks of leaves.
In a collaboration between the Mobile Lab at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures and DESY, a new laboratory environment optimized for X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI) will be developed. Responsibilities in this phase will include the design, implementation and commissioning of the new setup. Its performance will be demonstrated using magnified XPCI on mock-up and cultural heritage samples.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
A university degree (Master or equivalent) in physics or a closely related discipline is preferred. You have a strong background in experimental physics and interest to develop new imaging modalities for applications in cultural heritage.
Fluent written and spoken English is required. Further preferred qualifications and experience include:
- programming experience (Python preferred)
- X-ray imaging
- Fourier optics
- inverse problem solving (tomography, phase retrieval, mathematical modelling)
- structured and independent working style
- collaborative skills and creativity, and an interest in working across disciplinary boundaries
