Software Engineer Lead


Thazen is seeking an experienced Software Engineer Lead to provide technical leadership, software architecture expertise, and hands-on engineering support for complex software and simulation systems. This role is responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, and modification of one or more software development projects.

The Software Engineer Lead will provide technical direction and day-to-day leadership to teams of Software Engineers. The position combines hands-on software engineering with technical decision-making, team leadership, design and code oversight, and responsibility for meeting established cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive software development experience, strong knowledge of modern software architectures and engineering methodologies, and the ability to lead engineering teams in the development and integration of complex systems.


Key Responsibilities:


Technical Leadership:

  • Provide technical leadership for engineering teams consisting of approximately 4-8 Software Engineers.
  • Make technical decisions regarding software architecture, design, implementation approaches, interfaces, and development methodologies.
  • Assign technical tasks to team members, monitor progress, and proactively address issues that could affect schedule, cost, or technical performance.
  • Lead software design reviews and code reviews, moderate technical disagreements, and ensure review comments and identified issues are appropriately dispositioned.
  • Provide project status, technical progress, and updated Estimates-to-Complete (ETCs) to the Project Manager throughout program execution..
  • Provide coaching and counseling to team members and recommend corrective actions to the Project Manager when necessary.


Software Engineering:

  • Design and develop new software components, applications, and systems while making targeted modifications and enhancements to existing software applications.
  • Translate customer and system requirements into effective software solutions using established engineering and industry-standard development methodologies.
  • Define engineering work using both documented requirements and industry-standard software development practices.
  • Develop software within Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Apply expert knowledge of applicable programming languages, software architectures, and both procedural and object-oriented development methodologies.
  • Establish, conduct, and document software testing based on customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the overall architecture, design, development, integration, and maintenance of software products and applications.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project leadership to successfully integrate software within complex systems and simulation environments.
  • Travel domestically and/or internationally when required to support program and customer needs.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10 or more years of successful software development experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable programming languages.
  • Expert knowledge of software architectures and software design methodologies.
  • Expert knowledge of procedural and object-oriented programming methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Experience developing software to defined requirements and/or synthesizing technical and customer requirements into implementable software solutions.


Desired Experience:

Candidates with experience developing, integrating, or supporting complex modeling, simulation, and training systems are strongly preferred. Desired experience includes:

  • Experience with a variety of simulation and training devices, including but not limited to Full Motion Flight Simulators, Avionics, Instructor Operator Stations (IOS), and servers and supporting computing infrastructure.
  • Experience in the development, integration, or operation of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Extended Reality (XR), and mixed reality simulation environments.
  • Hands-on experience with simulation systems and technologies including, but not limited to Semi-Automated Forces (SAF), Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS), Image Generators (IGs), flight modeling software, and datalink simulation software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with immersive technologies, real-time rendering systems, and interoperable simulation architectures.
  • Experience integrating software with hardware, simulation devices, external systems, or other components within complex training or simulation environments.

Location and Travel

  • This is an in-office position located in Orlando, Florida.
  • Candidates must be able and willing to travel internationally as required.
  • Domestic travel may also be required based on program and customer needs.


Security Clearance Eligibility

A U.S. Government security clearance may be required for this position. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain the required clearance based on program requirements.
