Siloam Vision is a fast-growing medical imaging startup on a mission to reduce preventable blindness and improve health of populations worldwide. Our team is building ultra-widefield Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (SLO) systems that provide detailed insights into retinal structures, enabling precise assessments of retinal health and early detection of diseases.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Optical Engineer to lead the development and prototyping of our handheld ultrawide field-of-view OCT and SLO systems. This is a critical technical role with opportunities to drive innovation from concept through clinical deployment.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Design, simulate, and prototype custom optical subsystems for handheld OCT and SLO instruments
  • Perform optical simulations and analysis to validate design concepts
  • Develop and integrate optical alignment and calibration procedures
  • Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed drawings and specifications
  • Collaborate closely with other engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure that optical components meet quality and performance requirements
  • Build and test breadboard and compact form factor systems for human use
  • Support clinical validation and regulatory documentation efforts
  • Contribute to development of intellectual property and publication efforts
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of latest advancements in optical technology and incorporate them into designs

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. in Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Background in optical design (e.g., Zemax/OpticStudio) and optical system integration
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in laboratory prototyping, alignment, and troubleshooting
  • Ability to write technical reports and documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with OCT and/or SLO system development
  • Familiarity with galvanometer scanning, fiber optics, and broadband light sources
  • Familiarity with optical manufacturing processes
  • Experience with handheld or compact optical instruments and medical device development is not required but desired

Additional Information

  • Job Title: Optical Engineer
  • Work Environment: Lab and office setting. Some travel may be required for team meetings, vendor interactions or customer discussions. Flexible work hours with a strong culture of mentorship and growth are provided
  • Reporting Structure: Reports to Chief Technology Officer
  • Salary: Salary is based upon candidate’s experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. The Salary range is $70,000 to $120,000 USD per year based on education and experience
