We are seeking an experienced R&D Project Manager to join our team at our smart factory in Portlaoise.
Reporting to the Operations Director / CEO, the R&D Project Manager will lead Midland Steel’s automation and engineering innovation programme. The role is responsible for developing and delivering advanced automation solutions, integrating robotics and AI-driven technologies, and driving continuous improvement across manufacturing operations. Manage full project lifecycles, lead a technical team, and position Midland Steel at the forefront of Industry 4.0 manufacturing.
- Conceptualise, develop, and deliver automation systems, robotic integrations, and production planning applications across Midland Steel operations
- Manage full R&D project lifecycles from prototyping and testing through to equipment evaluation, installation, and post-installation optimisation
- Develop and simulate KUKA robot programmes using KUKA Sim and Visual Components; maintain robotic systems and troubleshoot automation cells
- Develop bespoke automation software using Python and C#; build and maintain dashboards, production apps, and automated reporting tools via Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate)
- Drive digitisation through automated data gathering, KPI reporting, and integration of AI tools into manufacturing workflows
- Lead scoping meetings with key external partners (MEP, GMT, DesignPro, EIT, Global Logic) and act as the primary contact for automation vendors and technology suppliers
- Conduct research in robotics, automation software, and hardware; develop User Requirement Specifications (URS) and pursue R&D grant funding opportunities.
- Implement group-wide standardisation initiatives; provide critical reporting and decision-making support to senior leadership
- Lead and develop the R&D engineering team, providing technical direction, mentorship, and performance oversight
- Collaborate cross-functionally with production and operations teams to ensure R&D outputs are operationally embedded and deliver measurable efficiency improvements
- Conduct prototyping and performance testing of new solutions using SolidWorks, Solid Edge, and AutoCAD, ensuring reliability prior to full deployment
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement, data-driven decision-making, and innovation across the business
Preferred background & experience
- Degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in industrial automation and robotics within a manufacturing environment
- Software development skills in Python and/or C#; experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate)
- Experience with BIM-to-Robot workflows and platforms such as Tekla Structures highly desirable
- Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA/HMI systems, and industrial automation software
- CAD/simulation tool experience: SolidWorks, Solid Edge, or AutoCAD
- Experience managing R&D projects end-to-end including prototyping, testing, vendor management, and commissioning
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Experience with grant writing and R&D funding applications an advantage
