We are seeking an Optical Test Engineer to characterize and validate the performance of sensors, optical lens assemblies, and integrated camera systems. In this role, you will work closely with the optical design team to measure as-built optical system performance, compare results against nominal designs, and drive root-cause investigation when measured performance deviates from prediction. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on metrology skills with a deep understanding of optomechanics and thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Quantify the performance of sensors and optical lens assemblies through measurements including modulation transfer function (MTF), minimum resolvable temperature difference (MRTD), and surface irregularity error.
- Support the optical design team by measuring the performance of optical systems and comparing measured results against nominal design predictions; document and communicate deviations.
- Assemble optical systems and lens assemblies, including component handling, alignment, and integration; clean optical components and handle fragile optical materials using proper techniques.
- Set up, align, calibrate, and operate optical metrology equipment including interferometers, collimators, blackbody sources, and various metrology equipment.
- Perform test and characterization of camera systems, including sensor integration, image capture, and image quality evaluation.
- Develop and document test plans, test procedures, and test reports for optical and electro-optical assemblies.
- Debug and troubleshoot test setups, hardware, camera interfaces, and data acquisition issues; drive root-cause analysis and corrective action.
- Interface camera systems and test instrumentation with computers for automated data collection and analysis.
- Evaluate optomechanical assemblies for alignment, mounting, and stability issues affecting optical performance.
- Maintain lab equipment, calibration records, and test data integrity.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience. All experience levels will be considered; responsibilities will be scaled accordingly.
- Experience with infrared (IR) and visible sensors, lenses, and optical systems.
- Working knowledge of optical performance metrics, including MTF, MRTD, wavefront error, and surface irregularity.
- Hands-on experience with optical measurement equipment such as interferometers, collimators, blackbodies, and other metrology equipment.
- Strong knowledge of optomechanics: mounts, fixturing, alignment methods, and tolerance effects on optical performance.
- Experience assembling optical systems and cleaning optical components (lenses, mirrors, windows) using industry-standard methods.
- Demonstrated care and dexterity handling fragile materials and delicate optical components.
- Experience with camera systems and interfacing cameras and instruments with computers.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across optical, mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with NVLabCap software for thermal imaging measurement and analysis is a plus.
- Familiarity with scripting or analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automated test and data analysis.
- Experience with optical design/analysis software (e.g., Zemax OpticStudio) for interpreting nominal design data.
- Familiarity with GD&T and reading optical/mechanical drawings.
