Lead Principal Software Engineer
Indexed description
About the Opportunity:
Our client is an innovative technology company operating at the intersection of ocean intelligence, geospatial technology, artificial intelligence, advanced software, and national security. The organization is developing cutting-edge commercial software and data capabilities designed to support complex maritime, geospatial, and mission-critical operations.
We are seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Principal Software Engineer to play a key role in advancing the deployment and adoption of advanced software solutions within highly secure and specialized operational environments.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, writing production-quality code, and working with a small, highly collaborative engineering team. This is not a purely architectural or management-focused role—approximately 60–70% of the role will be hands-on engineering and coding.
The ideal candidate will bring deep software engineering experience, a strong background in AI/ML and geospatial data, and experience working within or supporting secure government, intelligence, or defense environments. Experience with NGA CORE environments is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a senior technical contributor supporting the development and deployment of mission-critical software in secure and specialized operational environments.
- Remain highly hands-on, spending the majority of time designing, building, testing, and improving production software.
- Develop scalable backend applications and services using Python and Go.
- Build and enhance modern front-end applications using React and TypeScript.
- Work with complex geospatial datasets and develop solutions for geospatial data processing, visualization, and analysis.
- Build or support mapping and visualization capabilities using CesiumJS.
- Apply AI/ML knowledge and experience to support advanced data, analytics, and software capabilities.
- Collaborate with engineers across a broader software organization to solve complex technical challenges.
- Provide technical guidance and share knowledge with other engineers in a collaborative, mentorship-oriented environment.
- Participate in architecture discussions while remaining directly involved in implementation and delivery.
- Contribute to software design, code reviews, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
- Help bridge commercial software capabilities with the unique requirements of secure and mission-focused environments.
- Collaborate closely with a small engineering team while interfacing with broader product and software teams.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on software development experience; candidates must be actively interested in coding and technical implementation.
- Strong backend development experience with Python and Go.
- Experience developing modern front-end applications using React and TypeScript.
- Demonstrated experience working with AI/ML technologies or AI-driven software solutions.
- Experience working with geospatial datasets, geospatial applications, or spatial data processing.
- Experience with geospatial visualization or mapping technologies.
- Strong understanding of modern software architecture, APIs, distributed systems, and scalable application development.
- Experience working in highly secure, government, defense, intelligence, or similarly regulated environments.
- Active Top Secret clearance, or a background that enables the candidate to work effectively within a Top Secret cleared environment.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong team-oriented mindset with a willingness to share knowledge and mentor other engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within NGA CORE environments.
- Experience supporting intelligence, national security, defense, or special operations technology initiatives.
- Hands-on experience with CesiumJS for geospatial mapping and visualization.
- Experience with Cesium ion or similar geospatial data platforms.
- Experience deploying or supporting applications in secure, disconnected, or restricted computing environments.
- Experience building AI/ML-enabled products or integrating machine learning capabilities into production applications.
- Experience working in a small, fast-paced technology company or startup environment.
- Experience contributing across multiple engineering domains, including backend, frontend, geospatial data, and cloud-native software.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
Location:
Remote within the United States. Candidates should be comfortable supporting requirements associated with secure or cleared environments as needed.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a builder and technical leader, not someone who has moved entirely into architecture or people management. The ideal candidate will be comfortable moving between high-level technical discussions and hands-on coding.
If you're a highly experienced, hands-on Software Engineer with expertise in AI/ML, geospatial data, Python, Go, React, and TypeScript, and you're interested in applying your technical expertise to complex, mission-critical technology challenges, we'd love to hear from you.
If interested, please feel free to reach out at [email protected].

Debanjana Chatterjee
