Overview

We are working with a life sciences company looking for a hands-on Senior AI Leader to own the technical direction and development of its AI systems.

This role is suited to a Senior or Principal AI Engineer who has built complex AI systems in production and is ready to take on greater technical ownership. It may also suit an existing Lead, Head of AI or AI Director who wants to remain close to the technology.

You will design and build complex agentic systems, guide technical decisions and help shape the company’s wider AI capability.

Key Responsibilities

• Own technical decisions across the company’s AI systems and products.
• Design and build complex, multi-step agentic workflows.
• Develop systems using tool use, structured outputs, RAG and multi-agent approaches.
• Take AI systems from initial concept through to reliable production use.
• Build evaluation, testing, feedback and observability processes.
• Improve system accuracy, reliability, latency and cost.
• Identify and manage AI failure modes.
• Turn complex clinical processes into controlled and auditable systems.
• Guide decisions on model selection, fine-tuning and AI architecture.
• Work closely with engineering, product, clinical and scientific teams.
• Set technical standards and support the development of other engineers.
• Research and test new AI technologies where they have practical value.

Required Experience & Skills

• Strong hands-on experience building complex AI or LLM-based systems.
• A track record of taking agentic or multi-step AI systems into production.
• Strong Python backend engineering experience.
• Experience with FastAPI, LangGraph and vector databases.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure on GCP or AWS.
• Knowledge of APIs, Postgres, Docker and production system design.
• Experience with tool use, structured outputs and agent orchestration.
• Experience with AI evaluation, observability and system reliability.
• A good understanding of ML and NLP fundamentals.
• Confidence making technical decisions and setting engineering direction.
• Experience leading projects, mentoring engineers or owning technical delivery.
• Fully fluent in English.

Desirable (Nice to Have)

• Experience within life sciences, clinical research, healthcare or another regulated industry.
• Knowledge of clinical trials or clinical development.
• Experience building deterministic and auditable AI systems.
• Experience with LLM or SLM fine-tuning.
• Previous experience within an early-stage or fast-moving company.
• Experience growing an AI engineering team or technical capability.
