About the role and team
The Marketplace Segmentation team is at the forefront of optimizing Uber's core rides business by strategically differentiating product offerings to cater to diverse rider needs and market conditions. We build and maintain critical products like UberX Priority and Wait & Save. Our work also extends to strategic initiatives such as building a tiered portfolio and expanding Uber's global footprint. We leverage advanced matching algorithms, dynamic pricing, and machine learning to balance marketplace supply and demand, enhance rider experience, and drive incremental growth.
What you'll do
- Define and drive the long-term technical strategy and architecture for the Marketplace Segmentation domain, influencing decisions across multiple teams and organizations.
- Lead large, ambiguous, and highly impactful initiatives that span multiple engineering teams and directly contribute to Uber's strategic goals for marketplace efficiency, growth, and profitability.
- Provide deep technical expertise and mentorship to senior and staff engineers, elevating the overall technical bar of the team and fostering innovation.
- Identify fundamental technical challenges and opportunities within matching, pricing, and user experience, proposing novel solutions that can unlock significant business value.
- Act as a technical thought leader, representing the team in cross-functional forums and driving alignment on complex technical topics with Product, Data Science, and Executive leadership.
- Architect highly scalable, resilient, and performant systems capable of handling Uber's massive real-time transaction volume and diverse global market conditions.
- Establish and advocate for best practices in system design, coding, testing, and operational excellence across the organization.
Basic Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional experience building scalable, fault-tolerant products or platforms, with a track record of solving strategically important problems.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Go, C/C++, Java, Python, or JavaScript) and the ability to define organization-wide standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
- Exceptional expertise in designing and building complex, mission-critical distributed systems at internet scale.
- Demonstrated ability to drive technical vision and strategy, translating business objectives into concrete technical roadmaps and executing against them.
- Proven track record of solving the most challenging technical problems with innovative and pragmatic solutions.
- Outstanding communication, influence, and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong commitment to mentorship and team growth, with experience shaping the careers of other senior engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) with a focus on distributed computing, system performance, or machine learning.
- Deep knowledge of marketplace dynamics, economics, and optimization algorithms, with hands-on experience in areas like matching, pricing, or demand/supply forecasting.
- Publications or presentations at top-tier conferences or in academic journals.
- Experience with large-scale machine learning infrastructure and deployment in a real-time environment.
- Contributions to open-source projects or community leadership.
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $232,000 per year - USD $258,000 per year.
You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
