About the Team:
The Avionics team is responsible for the full lifecycle of Terran R’s nervous system, designing, building, testing, installing, and operating the hardware that connects and controls every major electrical system on the vehicle and ground. The team leverages close partnership between avionics design, manufacturing, and test to enable rapid iteration and feedback loops. Engineers are deeply embedded into other functions within Relativity, working closely with propulsion, GNC, fluids, and stage engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and operation. About the Role:
As an EMC Engineer on the Avionics Survivability team, you will perform electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis, test, and verification of Avionics hardware on the Terran R launch vehicle per MIL-STD-461 and related standards. You will oversee EMC testing and qualification across multiple products through the entire product lifecycle from concept to flight maturity to include initial design consultation, emissions and susceptibility testing, design verification, qualification testing, and vehicle-level integration testing. You will work with cross-functional partner teams across the company to ensure Terran R's Avionics systems meet all EMC requirements and operate reliably in the harsh electromagnetic environment of launch and flight. A strong candidate for the role will have deep technical expertise in EMC testing methodologies, MIL-STD-461 requirements, and sound project management skills to ensure hardware is both compliant and on-schedule to support Terran R's launch!
About You:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in EMC testing, analysis, and verification for mission-critical applications such as launch vehicles, spacecraft, aircraft, or defense systems
- Technical expertise in MIL-STD-461 or equivalent test methods including conducted emissions (CE101, CE102), conducted susceptibility (CS101, CS114, CS115, CS116), radiated emissions (RE101, RE102), and radiated susceptibility (RS103)
- Hands-on experience with EMC test equipment including spectrum analyzers, antennas, LISNs, current probes, signal generators, amplifiers, and shielded test facilities
- Strong understanding of electromagnetic interference (EMI) principles, shielding effectiveness, grounding techniques, filtering, and cable design
- Experience working with highly cross-functional teams (mechanical, thermal, electrical, software, systems) to develop integrated solutions for EMC compliance
Nice to haves but not required:
- Experience with additional EMC standards such as DO-160, MIL-STD-464, RTCA DO-160, or commercial standards (FCC Part 15, CISPR)
- Familiarity with EMC simulation tools (CST, FEKO, HFSS, EMCoS) for pre-compliance prediction and design optimization RF/microwave circuit design experience and understanding of antenna coupling and electromagnetic propagation
- Experience establishing or managing EMC test facilities and developing test procedures
- Knowledge of HIRF (High-Intensity Radiated Fields), lightning, and ESD testing requirements
