Principal Software Engineer

The Microsoft Purview Data Security engineering team builds the security, protection, and compliance capabilities that help organizations safeguard their most sensitive data across Microsoft 365, Fabric, Azure, endpoints, and multicloud environments. The team develops and operates mission-critical services that power Data Loss Prevention (DLP), Insider Risk Management, Information Protection, Adaptive Protection, and AI-era data security experiences used by enterprises worldwide.

We are looking for a passionate Principal Software Engineer with experiences working with all service aspects of high throughput and multi-tenant services, ability to design components carefully, properly handle errors, write clean and well-factored code with good tests and good maintainability.

Responsibilities

• Drive end-to-end design and implementation of highly scalable, reliable, and secure cloud services operating at Microsoft scale.
• Partner with Product Management, Design, and partner engineering teams to translate customer and business requirements into long-term platform investments.
• Establish engineering best practices around architecture, reliability, observability, performance, security, and operational excellence.
• Provide technical leadership across multiple feature teams, influencing engineering decisions beyond immediate organizational boundaries.
• Drive adoption of modern AI, agentic, and data intelligence capabilities to improve customer value and developer productivity.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• OR equivalent experience.
  

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
• OR equivalent experience.
  

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
