At Suncor, we produce and provide energy.

When you join Suncor, you become part of a company that has built a solid foundation for both business and employee success. We are a place where talented people thrive. As part of our team, you play a vital role in delivering energy we all rely on, and you'll make a meaningful impact in the communities where we live and work.

As the Application Lead / Solution Designer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting critical enterprise applications on AWS. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader who can help migrate legacy business capabilities to cloud-native, scalable, secure, and highly available architectures while also advancing the use of automation, AI-enabled development practices, and agentic solutions where they create measurable business value. You will lead technical design, guide implementation, improve existing capabilities, and partner with delivery teams to build resilient, supportable solutions. This is an opportunity for a technology professional who brings practical AWS experience, strong engineering discipline, curiosity about emerging technologies, and a bias for using AI responsibly to improve delivery speed, solution quality, operational reliability, and user outcomes.

What we offer:

We recognize your contribution and offer a range of rewards and development opportunities designed to support your success. Benefits/perks listed below may vary depending on the nature of your employment with Suncor and the region where you work.

  • Strong compensation: we offer competitive compensation, regional-based uplifts, annual bonuses, and long-term financial rewards. We also help you save for your future by offering pension programs, and savings plans with company matching
  • Benefits: utilize an employee assistance program and comprehensive company-paid health, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family to support your mental, physical, and financial well-being
  • Generous time-off: enjoy generous paid vacation time and personal time-off to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance
  • Talent development programs: Internal mobility, succession planning, and employee training and development programs are just a few ways we’re dedicated to your development

Minimum Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience designing, building, deploying, or supporting applications on AWS
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS services such as Lambda, EC2, S3, RDS, API Gateway, Cognito, DynamoDB, Glue, IAM, and related services (e.g. Docker, EKS / AKS)
  • Experience developing and supporting full-stack applications, REST APIs, microservices, serverless patterns, and event-driven solutions. This should include Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices, including Terraform, AWS CDK, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and secure deployment practices
  • Experience with TypeScript, Python, SQL/NoSQL database design, and modern integration patterns
  • Demonstrated use of AI-enabled software delivery practices, such as code generation, documentation support, test case creation, solution analysis, or developer productivity tools
  • AWS Developer – Associate certification is preferred; AWS Solutions Architect or AWS Generative AI certification would be considered an asset

Don’t have all the qualifications listed? That’s ok! Apply anyway. We acknowledge the value of transferable skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement scalable, secure, highly available, and fault-tolerant applications and services on AWS
  • Lead and support the modernization and migration of legacy applications, services, and business capabilities to AWS cloud environments
  • Design, develop, test, enhance, and support applications/microservices/API’s/serverless components using AWS technologies, modern software engineering practices, and cloud-native design patterns
  • Apply AI-enabled development practices where appropriate to improve delivery quality, accelerate documentation and testing, support solution analysis, and increase engineering productivity
  • Contribute to the design or evaluation of agentic and generative AI solutions, including use cases involving intelligent workflow automation, knowledge retrieval, tool/API invocation, content generation, or support automation
  • Ensure AI and agentic solutions are implemented responsibly, with appropriate security, data protection, guardrails, monitoring, validation, and human-in-the-loop controls
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize application performance, reliability, scalability, security, and cloud cost

Location and other Key Details:

  • This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with occasional site visits
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines, and the pay band will generally be based on years of experience and scope of work
