Our team collaborates closely with clients to address unique challenges and opportunities, ensuring each solution is tailored to their needs.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate core services of the ThingsX cloud platform. This role combines strong backend engineering fundamentals—including highly concurrent, scalable systems—with mandatory, day-to-day proficiency in modern AI coding assistants (including Anthropic Claude / Opus and comparable frontier models) for design, implementation, code review, debugging, and agent-assisted workflows.
Reports to: Manager, Engineering
Technology Stack
• Languages: Java, SQL
• Frameworks: Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Vert.x
• Messaging: MQTT, RabbitMQ, Kafka
• Database: MySQL, Redis, Elasticsearch
• Cloud: AWS (EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch)
• Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes
• Observability: Grafana, Prometheus
• Development: GitHub, GitHub Actions, Maven
• AI Tools: Claude / Opus (and equivalent frontier models used in daily engineering workflows)
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices for the ThingsX IoT cloud platform (device management, authentication, messaging, APIs, and related services).
• Design and evolve highly concurrent, scalable backend systems that reliably handle growth in devices, connections, and traffic.
• Build and improve MQTT / IoT gateway and cloud-to-device communication paths with reliability, security, and operability in mind.
• Own features end-to-end: technical design, implementation, testing, code review, CI/CD-supported delivery, deployment support, and production troubleshooting.
• Work with relational data stores (MySQL), caching (Redis), search (Elasticsearch), and messaging systems (MQTT, RabbitMQ, Kafka) as part of daily development.
• Collaborate with Engineering, DevOps, Product, and customer-facing teams on requirements, incidents, and platform improvements.
• Use AI coding assistants (Claude / Opus and equivalent models) daily for architecture exploration, implementation, reviews, debugging, test generation, and multi-step agent workflows—while remaining accountable for correctness, security, and code quality.
• Mentor peers on effective, responsible AI-assisted engineering practices and document patterns that improve team velocity without reducing quality.
• Participate in on-call / production support activities as needed for the services you own.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 5+ years of professional backend software development experience (or equivalent senior-level track record).
• Proficiency in Java and Spring Boot for production microservices; familiarity with Spring Cloud and/or Vert.x is a strong plus.
• Experience designing highly concurrent, scalable backend systems.
• Strong experience with MySQL (or equivalent RDBMS) and Redis; exposure to Elasticsearch is a plus.
• Hands-on experience building and operating services on AWS (e.g., EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Experience with microservice architectures; familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, etc.).
• Solid understanding of REST APIs, authentication/authorization patterns, and secure service-to-service communication (e.g., TLS).
• Experience with messaging systems such as MQTT, RabbitMQ, and/or Kafka.
• Mandatory AI proficiency: demonstrated, current daily use of Claude and/or Opus (or equivalent frontier models) in professional software work—including code reviews, debugging, design exploration, and agent-style task execution. Candidates should be able to describe concrete workflows they use today, not only general interest in AI.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively in a hybrid Taiwan-based engineering organization.
• Ability to work on-site in Taiwan three days per week and remotely two days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
• Deep experience with MQTT, IoT device platforms, or cellular/device connectivity systems.
• Hands-on experience with Grafana and Prometheus for service monitoring and operational dashboards.
• Familiarity with AWS Bedrock or other enterprise LLM hosting for engineering workflows.
• Prior ownership of production incidents, SLOs, or reliability improvements for high-throughput services.
Location & Work Arrangement
Taiwan · Hybrid · Three (3) days per week in office · Two (2) days per week remote · Full-time employee.
How to Apply
Please apply via LinkedIn with your resume and a brief note describing (1) your most relevant backend production experience—especially concurrency/scalability—and (2) how you currently use Claude/Opus (or equivalent) in day-to-day engineering work.
