Backend Payments Engineer

We are working with a growing Stockholm-based payments technology company developing secure and scalable financial products used across multiple markets.

About the Role

We are looking for a Backend Payments Engineer to join an experienced product and engineering team.

You will develop the services responsible for processing, routing and monitoring financial transactions. This includes building APIs, integrating with external financial infrastructure and ensuring the platform remains reliable as transaction volumes and customer numbers continue to grow.

You will work on business-critical technology rather than conventional web applications, solving complex challenges involving distributed systems, financial integrations and high availability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain backend payment services
• Build APIs and integrations with banks, payment providers and external partners
• Improve the performance, reliability and scalability of transaction-processing systems
• Develop services within a distributed, microservice-based architecture
• Monitor and troubleshoot payment flows and production issues
• Contribute to settlement, reconciliation and transaction-management functionality
• Write automated tests and improve CI/CD processes
• Collaborate with engineering, product and operational teams
• Contribute to architectural and technical decisions

Required Qualifications

• Commercial backend development experience using Java or Kotlin
• Experience building APIs, microservices or distributed systems
• Strong understanding of relational databases
• Experience with automated testing and modern development practices
• Familiarity with cloud or containerised environments
• Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills
• Professional English communication skills

Preferred Experience

• Previous experience within payments, FinTech or banking
• Payment gateways, acquiring, issuing or transaction processing
• Open banking or account-to-account payments
• Settlement and reconciliation systems
• Kafka or another event-driven messaging technology
• AWS, Azure or GCP
• Observability and production-monitoring tools
• Knowledge of PCI DSS, ISO 8583, EMV or other payment standards
