Software Engineer (m/f/d)
Indexed description
Hogrefe, with psychology at its core, identifies, develops, and disseminates knowledge about human experience. We create and publish scientifically based printed and electronic assessments, books, and journals focused on psychology and psychiatry. We are the largest company in our field in Europe and employ over 660 people worldwide.
Our subsidiary, Hogrefe Digital Solutions GmbH, develops the Hogrefe Test System (HTS), a web platform for comprehensive psychological online assessments. We are more than 60 people including Software Engineers, Psychologists, Product Managers, Quality Assurance, and UX Designers. Together, we are making Hogrefe successful.
We are looking for a full-time Software Engineer (m/f/d) to strengthen our partner enablement team. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis. In this role, you'll build API-first solutions that enable external partners to seamlessly integrate Hogrefe's assessment portfolio into their own products and workflows. You'll design secure, scalable and developer-friendly APIs that create lasting value for a growing ecosystem of partners.
What will you be doing?
- Design, build, and maintain API-first integration solutions that enable external partners to consume Hogrefe's test portfolio
- Develop productized software capabilities — reusable, well-documented, and supportable at scale rather than one-off integrations
- Collaborate with colleagues to architect and implement backend services primarily in Java, with API design best practices (REST/versioning/documentation) at the core
- Ensure APIs meet performance requirements under partner-scale load and usage patterns
- Implement and uphold security standards for external-facing APIs (authentication, authorization, data protection)
- Design easy-to-use developer-facing capabilities (SDKs, documentation, sandbox/testing tools) to reduce partner integration friction
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, security, and partner-facing teams to align technical solutions with business impact goals
- Support and troubleshoot partner integrations, addressing technical issues that arise during onboarding and ongoing usage
- Contribute to the evolution of the partner enablement platform's architecture and roadmap
- Evaluate and adopt relevant tooling/frameworks to support integration or tooling needs
Who are you?
- Strong hands-on experience as a Java developer, with a solid foundation in backend/API development
- Experience with the Spring Boot or similar frameworks is appreciated, but not mandatory
- Practical experience optimizing API performance (latency, throughput, load handling)
- Proven expertise in API design principles (REST, versioning, documentation standards like Open-API/Swagger) is ideal
- Solid understanding of API security practices (OAuth/OIDC, authentication, authorization, data protection)
- Experience building scalable, production-grade backend systems
- Understanding of what makes integrations easy-to-use for external/third-party developers
- Familiarity with modern CI/CD and version control practices (Git, deployment pipelines)
- Experience with TypeScript is nice to have
- Experience working with or enabling external partners/customers, ideally in a platform or integration context
- Nice to have: experience with TypeScript
- Strong communication skills — able to work across internal teams and represent technical solutions to external partners
- Good written and spoken English; German is an advantage
