Our challenge
We are seeking an experienced Java Architect to design, develop, and guide the implementation of modern, scalable enterprise applications using microservices. The ideal candidate will be hands-on with Java 17+, Spring Boot, reactive programming, Apache Kafka, Angular, and cloud technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering teams, product owners, and enterprise architects to define technical solutions, establish architectural standards, and deliver secure, high-performing, and maintainable applications.
Additional Information*
The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Cleveland, OH/Pittsburgh, PA/Dallas, TX is $125k - $135k/year & benefits (see below).
The Role
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement scalable applications using Java 17 or higher and Spring Boot.
- Define and evolve microservices architecture, including service boundaries, communication patterns, resilience, scalability, and deployment strategies.
- Design and implement microfrontend architecture for modern, modular, and independently deployable user interfaces.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Develop reactive and non-blocking applications using Reactive Programming, Project Reactor, and Spring WebFlux.
- Design event-driven systems and asynchronous communication using Apache Kafka.
- Guide the development of responsive and modular web applications using Angular.
- Establish architecture principles, design patterns, coding standards, and best practices.
- Evaluate and recommend suitable frameworks, tools, and technologies.
- Ensure applications meet requirements for performance, availability, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Design RESTful APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
- Collaborate with DevOps teams to support CI/CD, containerization, monitoring, and automated deployments.
- Mentor developers and provide guidance on modern Java, Spring, microservices, and frontend development practices.
- Produce and maintain architecture documentation, technical specifications, and solution diagrams.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven software development experience, with significant experience in Java-based enterprise applications.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 17+, Spring Boot, Microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, Reactive programming and Spring WebFlux, Apache Kafka and Angular.
- Experience designing distributed, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems.
- Strong knowledge of object-oriented design, SOLID principles, design patterns, and clean architecture.
- Experience with microfrontend concepts, such as Independent frontend deployment, Module Federation or similar technologies, Shared components and libraries and Frontend application integration
- Proficiency in relational and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with unit testing, integration testing, contract testing, and automated quality checks.
- Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Working knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and practices.
- Strong understanding of application security, authentication, authorization, and secure API design.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Spring Cloud, Service Discovery, API Gateway, and centralized configuration.
- Knowledge of cloud-native development and twelve-factor application principles.
- Familiarity with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and JWT.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
- Relevant cloud or Java certifications.
