Principal Backend Engineer – Porto (Hybrid) | Up to €180k + Bonus

Backed by leading investors and experiencing significant growth, they're investing heavily in their engineering organisation to scale the next generation of their platform

As a Principal Backend Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership across several engineering teams, driving architectural decisions, mentoring senior engineers, and helping define engineering best practices across the organisation

What You'll Be Doing:

• Design and evolve highly scalable, cloud-native backend systems
• Build secure, resilient services capable of supporting mission-critical workloads
• Drive engineering standards across modern Java technologies, distributed systems and clean architectural principles
• Collaborate with Product, Platform and Engineering leadership to shape technical strategy
• Lead cross-functional initiatives and mentor senior engineers across multiple teams
• Improve platform reliability, performance and developer experience at scale

What We're Looking For:

• 8+ years building and operating large-scale backend systems in production
• Experience working at Staff or Principal Engineer level
• Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices and event-driven architectures
• Experience designing distributed systems with a focus on scalability, resilience and performance Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker and Kubernetes

Location: Porto, hybrid working (2–3 days per week in the office)

Package: salary up to €180,000 plus bonus
