Our Digital & Consumer domain is one of eight tech domains within C&A and shaped around 150 IT- and Design-peers. We are developing creative and innovative in-house IT solutions for our three customer-centric platforms: our iOS and Android applications, as well as the C&A web shop. We are seeking a (Senior) Backend Engineer to help design, build, and scale the core systems behind our software products. In this role, you will own backend architecture and play a key role in shaping our API design, event-driven systems, and integration layers.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, with a strong focus on system architecture and integration layers
  • Support and evolve event-driven and streaming architectures, including data pipelines and asynchronous communication
  • Shape and maintain cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code practices in collaboration with platform and DevOps teams
  • Drive architectural decisions across teams, ensuring systems are reliable, observable, and aligned with long-term technical strategy
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, guiding engineers on system design, scalability, and performance
  • Champion engineering best practices across code quality, CI/CD, and automation.

What You Bring

  • Senior-level experience building backend systems in Java, with strong knowledge of modern frameworks (Spring Boot; Micronaut or Quarkus)
  • Proven ability to design scalable, distributed, and event-driven architectures, including streaming systems (Kafka, Pulsar, or similar)
  • Good understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, API design, microservices, and data stores (SQL and NoSQL)
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms and infrastructure-as-code (AWS/GCP/Azure, Terraform), CI/CD, monitoring, and observability
  • Great communication skills, with a mindset of ownership and continuous improvement
