South Carolina State University seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial, and visionary leader to serve as the Executive Director of the BECT Institute. The Executive Director is responsible for advancing its mission of excellence in education, research, workforce development, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement in business, environment, communication, transportation and technology-related disciplines. BECT’s mission is to develop and implement programs that strengthen academic excellence, expand research and sponsored activities, foster industry partnerships, and support student success.

The Executive Director of the BECT Institute will play a critical role in shaping the future of student success in research, innovation and entrepreneurship at South Carolina State University. Through visionary leadership, strategic partnerships, and transformative programming, the Executive Director will help prepare the next generation, strengthen the regional economy, and elevate the University’s role as a driver of research, innovation and economic opportunity.

The Executive Director will serve as the catalyst to expand the Institute’s capacity to identify experiential learning opportunities, develop partnerships, and secure resources to prepare students for the workplace.

The Executive Director will collaborate across academic colleges, administrative units, industry partners, government agencies, investors, and community organizations to position the BECT Institute as a recognized leader in enhancing the career readiness of students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for the BECT Institute aligned with the mission and priorities of South Carolina State University.
  • Expand research activities and interdisciplinary collaborations related to business, engineering, computing, and technology fields.
  • Build a culture of innovation, creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurial thinking across the University
  • Develop and promote collaborative projects that support workforce readiness for students and economic development
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration among academic programs and external partners.
  • Develop programs that prepare students for careers in high-demand sectors and emerging industries. Support student research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership development activities.
  • Strengthen the University’s role as an economic development partner for Orangeburg and surrounding communities.
  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities including grants, sponsorships, corporate partnerships, and philanthropic support.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and investments to maximize program impact and sustainability.
  • Provide effective management of Institute operations, staff, budgets, and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for university leadership and stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements For Entry Into Position

  • Master’s degree required

Preferred Requirements For Entry Into Position

  • Doctoral degree preferred in business, entrepreneurship, education, economic development, innovation, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
