General Manager – Construction Operations

Boss Companies

Poway, California | On-Site | Full-Time

About Boss Companies

Boss Companies is a San Diego-based design-build organization operating across residential construction, custom home design, and custom pool construction through Boss Construction & Design, House to Home, and Distinguished Pools.

As our companies continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced and highly organized General Manager to oversee day-to-day office operations, coordinate our internal departments, maintain company standards, and work directly with ownership to keep the organization operating efficiently.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who is comfortable working in a fast-moving construction environment, managing multiple priorities, and being the central point of coordination between ownership, design, production, project management, employees, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.

The Role

The General Manager reports directly to the CEO and is responsible for maintaining organization and accountability throughout the company.

This is not an individual Project Manager or Superintendent position. While the GM must maintain a strong understanding of active projects and construction operations, the role is focused on overseeing the people and processes managing those projects rather than managing every detail of a single job.

The right person will be organized, confident, adaptable, technologically capable, comfortable making decisions, and—most importantly—someone who brings solutions, not just problems, to company leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate office staff and maintain accountability across Design, Production, and Project Management departments.
  • Maintain a high-level understanding of active projects, schedules, selections, client concerns, and operational issues.
  • Lead the company's weekly operations meeting and coordinate cross-department priorities.
  • Work directly with the CEO on company decisions, operational issues, contracts, pricing approvals, and business priorities.
  • Review, prepare, execute, organize, and maintain company documentation, including client contracts, change orders, subcontractor agreements, business records, licensing documents, and other formal correspondence.
  • Review and execute subcontractor agreements after scope, pricing, payment terms, and scheduling have been approved by ownership.
  • Assist the Production Department with obtaining subcontractor bids and preparing pricing for contracts and change orders.
  • Review subcontractor invoices and payment schedules with ownership.
  • Assist with entering and maintaining project financial information within Buildertrend.
  • Help resolve client escalations, project coordination issues, schedule conflicts, selection issues, and internal communication concerns.
  • Draft and review professional client communications when management involvement is required.
  • Enforce company policies, procedures, documentation standards, and employee expectations.
  • Handle employee write-ups, routine personnel issues, onboarding, and internal coordination.
  • Serve as administrator for company technology systems, including Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, Intune, Adobe, company phones, and tablets.
  • Maintain and improve company SOPs, workflows, templates, and administrative systems.
  • Monitor business licenses and other recurring company compliance requirements.
  • Meet with prospective subcontractors and vendors, develop new trade relationships, and help maintain a strong network of qualified subcontractors.
  • Identify operational problems before they escalate and present ownership with recommended solutions.
  • Take on changing priorities and special assignments from ownership as business needs evolve.
What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who has the maturity and judgment to operate independently while understanding when ownership approval is required.

Strong candidates will have experience in construction operations, residential construction, design-build, project coordination, general management, operations management, or a comparable leadership role.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous leadership or management experience in construction or a closely related industry.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience working with contracts, change orders, subcontractor agreements, proposals, invoices, and other business documentation.
  • The ability to coordinate several departments and multiple active projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confidence communicating with clients, employees, subcontractors, vendors, and company ownership.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • The ability to prioritize independently in an environment where priorities can change quickly.
  • Strong computer and technology skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Adobe.
  • Experience with Buildertrend or similar construction-management software strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with California residential construction and design-build operations preferred.
  • The ability to maintain professionalism, discretion, and good judgment when handling confidential business and employee matters.

A four-year degree is not required. Relevant experience, leadership ability, judgment, organization, and the ability to operate effectively in a construction environment are more important to us than a specific degree.

Schedule

Full-Time, On-Site

Monday through Friday

Typical office hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

This is an in-office leadership role at our Poway location and is not intended to be remote.

Why Join Boss Companies?

This position provides the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on a growing construction organization rather than simply managing one piece of the business.

The General Manager works directly with ownership and has visibility across the entire company. The person in this role will have the authority to improve systems, strengthen accountability, develop company procedures, support employees, and help shape how Boss Companies operates as it continues to grow.

We are looking for someone who wants to take ownership of an organization, not simply complete assigned tasks.
