Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, implementation, and ongoing support of a large-scale production network. This individual will play a key role in network architecture, infrastructure modernization, and operational excellence within a carrier-grade environment.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience supporting high-availability ISP, telecommunications, or enterprise networks, with a strong background in Internet routing, BGP, and complex network migrations. This role will also help drive network standardization, automation initiatives, and the evolution of a multi-vendor infrastructure that includes Juniper, Cisco, and optical networking technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and support large-scale network infrastructure supporting Internet, MPLS, Ethernet, and transport services.
- Architect and maintain Internet edge and backbone routing environments utilizing technologies such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, and EVPN.
- Optimize routing policies, Internet peering, transit connectivity, traffic engineering, and DDoS mitigation strategies.
- Assist in the migration and standardization of the network toward next-generation routing platforms while supporting existing production infrastructure.
- Lead complex network upgrade projects, platform refreshes, customer migrations, and backbone enhancements.
- Develop implementation plans, testing procedures, rollback strategies, maintenance documentation, and risk mitigation plans.
- Troubleshoot advanced routing, switching, optical transport, and Layer 2/Layer 3 connectivity issues across production environments.
- Build and enhance network automation using Python, Ansible, APIs, Git, and Infrastructure-as-Code methodologies.
- Create engineering documentation, network standards, low-level designs, and operational procedures.
- Partner with Network Operations and Infrastructure teams to improve monitoring, telemetry, capacity planning, and overall network reliability.
- Evaluate new technologies, validate software releases, and participate in vendor solution assessments.
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers while serving as a senior technical escalation resource.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance activities and an on-call rotation as required.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience supporting enterprise, ISP, telecommunications, or carrier-class network environments.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Internet routing and large-scale BGP deployments.
- Strong expertise in:
- BGP (iBGP/eBGP, route reflectors, routing policies, communities, and traffic engineering)
- OSPF and IS-IS
- MPLS, EVPN, Layer 2 VPNs, Layer 3 VPNs, and Segment Routing concepts
- Carrier Ethernet technologies
- IPv4 and IPv6 networking
- Experience administering Juniper routing and switching platforms running Junos.
- Working knowledge of Cisco routing and switching technologies.
- Familiarity with optical transport or packet transport networking platforms.
- Demonstrated success leading infrastructure upgrades, migration efforts, and modernization projects.
- Strong understanding of Internet peering, transit connectivity, and route optimization.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills across Layer 1 through Layer 3 networking.
- Experience integrating DWDM or optical transport solutions is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with Python, Ansible, REST APIs, Git, and network automation tools.
- Experience with network monitoring, telemetry, and observability platforms.
- Familiarity with cloud networking concepts in AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud.
- Strong knowledge of network security best practices, including ACLs, prefix filtering, DDoS protection, and infrastructure hardening.
- Proven ability to lead technical initiatives, collaborate across teams, and communicate effectively with both engineering and leadership.
- Experience coordinating remote implementation teams and third-party vendors.
- Excellent documentation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juniper (JNCIP/JNCIE), Cisco (CCNP/CCIE), or equivalent networking certifications.
- Previous experience working in a service provider or carrier backbone environment.
- Exposure to software-defined networking (SDN) or programmable network architectures.
- Experience designing highly available and disaster recovery-focused network solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
