[High salary/Unlimited PTO/Full Remote] Backend engineer (Only open to candidates already in Japan)

This is an elite-tier startup backed by major financial institutions. They are building infrastructure and products at the frontier of decentralized technology — systems where scale, reliability, and performance are not nice-to-haves.

You’ll work directly on core backend infrastructure, designing and operating systems that need to perform reliably under demanding production conditions. You’ll own meaningful problems from first principles through production, with the autonomy to shape architecture, engineering standards, and how the system scales.

The environment is fast, highly autonomous, and engineering-led. Small team. High trust. Very little bureaucracy.

You’ll have real ownership across backend architecture, distributed systems, data infrastructure, performance, reliability, and production operations — working closely with Product and Engineering to turn ambitious ideas into resilient, production-grade systems.

What you’ll do

• Own end-to-end backend systems and services from architecture through production

• Design and operate scalable APIs and distributed systems using TypeScript and modern backend frameworks

• Build systems capable of handling high traffic, heavy workloads, and demanding production conditions
• Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, and data pipelines
• Work across Web2 and Web3 infrastructure, including blockchain integrations, event processing, indexing, and on-chain data systems
• Build for performance, fault tolerance, observability, and operational reliability
• Own production incidents, scaling challenges, and the systems that keep critical services running

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience building and operating production systems
• Strong TypeScript skills and experience 
• Deep understanding of backend architecture, APIs, distributed systems, concurrency, and scalability
• Strong PostgreSQL expertise, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and production database managementHands-on experience with blockchain indexing, event processing, or on-chain data infrastructure
• Candidates already located in Japan, with Japanese communication skills a strong plus
• Experience working at strong local or global engineering organizations (e.g. Mercari, LINE, SmartNews, Indeed, Amazon, Google, etc.)
