The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.
Listen, you elders; take heed, all of you who live in the land! Has anything like this ever happened in your time or in the time of your ancestors?
Then tell it to your sons, and let them tell it to their sons, and their sons to the next generation.
What the locust swarm left, the grasshopper devoured; what the locusts left, the swarm devoured; what the swarm left, the caterpillar devoured.
Wake up, you sleepers, and weep; wail, you who sing sweet songs
A swarm will invade my land—a swarm that is both mighty and innumerable; its teeth are like the teeth of lions, and its fangs like those of young lions.
He has turned my vineyards into a wasteland; he has pruned my fig trees; he has stripped them bare and broken them; their branches have turned white.
Weep like a young woman dressed in mourning for the husband of her youth.
The grain offering has perished, and the libation in the house of the LORD; the priests, the servants of the LORD, weep.
The fields are laid waste; the land mourns, for the wheat has perished; the wine is ashamed; the oil has failed.
The millers are put to shame; the vintners wail over the wheat and the barley, for the harvest of the field has perished.
The vine stands disgraced; the fig tree has withered; the pomegranate, the mulberry, the apple, and all the fruit trees of the field have withered; joy has been taken away from the sons of men.
Put on sackcloth and mourn, priests, wail, you who minister at the altar; come and offer yourselves in sackcloth, you servants of my God, for both the grain offering and the drink offering have perished in the house of your God.
Declare a fast; call the assembly; gather the elders and all the residents of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.
Has not all the food perished before our very eyes in the house of our God, along with the joy and the merriment?
The livestock are lying in their own dung; the granaries are in ruins, the storehouses are deserted, for the wheat has withered.
Why do the cattle low? Why do the oxen groan? Because they have no pasture; even the flock of sheep is perishing.
But I, O Lord, will cry out to You, for the drought has stripped the meadows of their beauty, and the fire has consumed the sap of all the trees of the land.
Even the wild animals of the field look to You as a thirsty hedgehog looks to the rain; the streams of water have dried up, and the drought has destroyed the beauty of the pastures.
