Key Responsibilities

  • Own the target-state architecture for the data platform across ingestion, storage, modeling, serving, and governance.
  • Set the technical direction for the analytical ecosystem, including SQL Server, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and ClickHouse.
  • Define and evolve the integration architecture across Azure Data Factory, REST APIs, NATS, and change data capture (CDC).
  • Design, build, and operate event-driven, service-oriented workloads using Go and Python on Kubernetes.
  • Make AI-assisted development a core team capability by building and adopting agentic tools, including code-aware agents and retrieval systems grounded in internal schemas, metadata, and data lineage.
  • Use AI tooling to improve engineering velocity, testing, documentation, and automation while establishing responsible-use practices appropriate for a regulated environment.
  • Establish the data contracts, schema standards, and data-quality service-level agreements (SLAs) used across engineering and analytics teams.
  • Embed appropriate PII and PHI protections, role-based access controls, auditing, and traceability throughout the platform.
  • Mentor engineers, lead architecture and design reviews, and establish strong engineering standards.
  • Translate executive priorities and ambiguous business needs into clear technical strategies and actionable delivery roadmaps.

Required Experience

  • Eight or more years of experience across data engineering, software engineering, platform engineering, or architecture.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with T-SQL, SQL Server at scale, SQL Server Analysis Services, and Azure Data Factory.
  • Production experience with ClickHouse or a comparable columnar data platform, such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks.
  • Strong, production-level programming skills in Python, Go, or a comparable backend language, with a willingness to contribute directly to the codebase—not solely produce architectural designs.
  • Experience designing event-driven and distributed systems using technologies such as REST APIs, NATS, Kafka, and CDC.
  • Experience deploying and operating production workloads on Kubernetes.
  • Demonstrated fluency with AI-assisted software engineering, including coding agents, LLM tooling, retrieval-augmented generation, and evaluations.
  • A clear perspective on how to implement AI responsibly within a regulated, multi-site organization.
  • A proven record of partnering with executives and converting complex or ambiguous business needs into scalable, durable technical solutions.
  • Must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, Birmingham, Alabama, and work onsite.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in veterinary medicine, healthcare, or multi-site retail or service organizations.
  • Experience working with Practice Information Management Systems (PIMS) or similar industry-specific operational platforms.
