Senior Software Engineer (AI & Modern Software Engineering)
Location: Melbourne (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Permanent
About the Opportunity
We're partnering with an AI-native technology consultancy that's building next-generation products at the intersection of Software Engineering, AI and modern data platforms.
You'll join a highly collaborative engineering team working on both proprietary AI products and bespoke client solutions, helping build production-grade software that leverages the latest advances in Generative AI.
This is an opportunity to work on genuinely modern technology using LLMs, RAG architectures, cloud-native platforms and scalable software engineering practices - while contributing to products that are shaping how organisations interact with data.
If you're passionate about great engineering, curious about AI and enjoy solving complex technical problems, we'd love to hear from you.
About the Role
This is a hands-on Senior Software Engineering role where you'll contribute across the full software development lifecycle - from architecture and design through to deployment and client delivery.
You'll work on two key streams:
- Developing and evolving the company's flagship AI platform, which uses LLMs, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), ElasticSearch and APIs to connect to multiple enterprise data sources.
- Building bespoke AI-powered applications for enterprise clients, giving you ownership of solutions from initial design through to production deployment.
You'll collaborate closely with Product, Engineering and AI specialists to build scalable, production-ready software while helping shape engineering standards across the team.
As one of the more experienced engineers, you'll also mentor junior developers, helping them apply strong engineering principles while making effective use of AI-assisted development tools.
What You'll Be Doing
- Design, build and maintain production-grade software applications
- Develop AI-enabled products using modern software engineering practices
- Contribute to architecture and technical design discussions
- Build scalable integrations between enterprise systems and AI platforms
- Work across the complete software engineering lifecycle, including infrastructure, deployment and observability
- Improve engineering standards, code quality and development practices
- Support and mentor junior engineers through code reviews and technical guidance
- Collaborate directly with clients where required, helping deliver tailored software solutions
- Continuously evaluate emerging AI technologies and identify opportunities to improve products and delivery
About You
You'll be an experienced Software Engineer with strong engineering fundamentals and a genuine interest in modern AI technologies.
We're looking for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, understands how software should be designed and built, and is excited by the opportunity to work in an AI-first environment.
You'll likely have experience with:
- Strongly typed programming languages such as Java, C#, C++ or Rust
- Modern software engineering principles and design patterns
- Building production applications using structured engineering workflows
- CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment
- Observability, monitoring and production support
- Cloud platforms such as Google Cloud (preferred), AWS or Azure
- Working across infrastructure as well as application development
- Product engineering or SaaS environments
Python exposure is welcome but isn't the primary focus of the role.
What We're Looking For
The ideal person isn't just technically strong—they're genuinely passionate about software engineering.
You'll bring:
- A genuine interest in AI and emerging technologies
- Curiosity to experiment with new tools and ways of working
- Strong software design and architecture fundamentals
- Experience working across the full engineering lifecycle
- The ability to mentor and support more junior developers
- A collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills
- Stable employment history demonstrating consistent growth and impact
Experience working within both larger engineering organisations and smaller product or startup environments would be highly regarded, providing a balance of engineering discipline and broad technical exposure.
Why Join?
This is a business where AI isn't just a feature - it's at the centre of everything they build.
You'll be working alongside engineers who are constantly experimenting with the latest AI technologies and applying them to real-world products.
The work is varied and technically challenging, offering exposure to:
- Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)
- AI-powered enterprise applications
- Product engineering
- Modern cloud platforms
- End-to-end software ownership
- Direct collaboration with enterprise clients
Unlike larger organisations where responsibilities are often siloed, you'll have the opportunity to work across architecture, software development, infrastructure, DevOps and product delivery while seeing the direct impact of your work.
Tech Stack
- Java, C#, C++, Rust (or similar strongly typed languages)
- Python (beneficial)
- Google Cloud (preferred), AWS or Azure
- CI/CD
- Observability & Monitoring
- APIs
- ElasticSearch
- LLMs & Generative AI
- RAG architectures
Working Environment
- Hybrid working (typically 2 days in the Melbourne office)
- Collaborative engineering culture
- Opportunity to mentor junior engineers
- Exposure to both product development and client delivery
- High-trust, low-bureaucracy environment where engineers have genuine influence over technical direction
