Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
Department: IT
Reports to: Vice President of Technology and AI (Johann Kriek)
Location: Overland Park, KS
Effective Date: July 31, 2026
Tyr Energy represents the North American cornerstone of the ITOCHU Corporation global electric power strategy, focused on clean and renewable generation and technology solutions.
The Senior Software Engineer applies the principles and practices of software engineering to design, develop, test, and maintain the proprietary software systems that run Tyr’s energy management, market participation, and corporate operations, including the data pipelines, integrations, and AI and machine learning systems that support trading and decision-making. Many of these systems operate in a real-time, NERC CIP regulated environment and interface directly with operational technology, including SCADA systems, remote terminal units (RTUs), and the PI data historian across Tyr’s generating facilities. The role designs and delivers production software and maintains working knowledge of Tyr’s broader technology environment to provide continuity and technical oversight across the technology function. Day-to-day infrastructure and security operations are performed by Tyr’s managed service and security providers; this role focuses on engineering Tyr’s software systems.
Objectives of this role:
- Apply software engineering principles to design, develop, test, and maintain the software systems that support energy management, market participation, and corporate operations.
- Design and architect the applications, data pipelines, integrations, and AI and machine learning systems the business depends on, and deliver them as production software.
- Continuously improve the reliability, performance, security, and maintainability of Tyr’s software systems.
- Maintain working knowledge of Tyr’s technology environment sufficient to provide continuity and technical oversight across the technology function.
- Produce thorough documentation and follow sound engineering practices so that Tyr’s systems remain reliable, maintainable, and well understood.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Software Engineering (Primary): Apply the principles and practices of software engineering to design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain Tyr’s proprietary software systems across the Microsoft 365 and Azure environment. Build the near real-time resource and market dashboards, the automated processes that receive customer offer and bid data and that format, submit, and reconcile offers, bids, and settlement statements with markets (for example, via OATI), and the integrations and data pipelines that connect Tyr’s systems. Development is performed in modern languages and frameworks, including C# and .NET, Python, and modern web frameworks such as React, Next.js, and Blazor, over SQL Server data stores.
- AI & Machine Learning Systems: Design, develop, and deploy the AI, machine learning, and analytical systems that enhance trading, operations, and decision-making, including forecasting pipelines, optimization of bidding and offering strategies across natural gas scheduling and solar, wind, and battery storage participation, retrieval-augmented generation against regulatory and commission documentation, and agentic monitoring and automation.
- Systems Design & Architecture: Analyze requirements and design the architecture of new and existing systems, exercising engineering judgment over design tradeoffs, interfaces, data models, testing, and validation, and establishing the standards and practices that keep Tyr’s software reliable and maintainable.
- Operational Technology & Continuity: Build and maintain the software, interfaces, and data pipelines that connect Tyr’s systems with operational technology in the field, including SCADA systems, remote terminal units (RTUs), and the PI data historian, supporting real-time communication with Tyr resources and regional transmission organizations. Work within Tyr’s NERC CIP obligations, and maintain working knowledge of the broader technology environment to provide continuity and technical oversight across the technology function. Day-to-day operations and support are performed by Tyr’s managed service and security providers.
- Documentation & Quality: Produce and maintain the technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and automated tests required for reliable, maintainable, and transferable software.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work with internal and external stakeholders to gather requirements, communicate technical design and status, and support delivery of the company’s software systems.
Qualifications and requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
- At least five (5) years of professional software engineering experience, with a demonstrated ability to deliver and maintain production software.
- Proficiency designing and developing software in modern languages and frameworks, including C# and .NET or Python, and at least one modern web framework (for example, React, Next.js, or Blazor).
- Strong relational database design and SQL skills (for example, Microsoft SQL Server).
- Practical experience across the Microsoft 365 and Azure ecosystem.
- Sound software architecture, testing, version control, and SDLC practices, and strong technical documentation skills.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to gather requirements from and explain technical design to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred skills and qualifications:
- Experience in energy, utilities, trading, or other real-time, regulated, or operationally critical environments.
- Experience designing and deploying AI, machine learning, or analytical systems, including LLM, retrieval-augmented generation, or agentic systems.
- Familiarity with wholesale energy market interfaces (for example, OATI) and RTO and ISO participation.
- Hands-on familiarity with operational technology (OT) systems and real-time data, including building or interfacing software with SCADA systems and remote terminal units (RTUs).
- Familiarity with the PI data historian (OSIsoft / AVEVA PI) and with NERC CIP compliance obligations in a bulk electric system environment.
- A master’s degree in a related field.
Compensation/Benefits:
- Salary negotiable based on candidates’ qualifications.
- Eligible to participate in Tyr Energy’s benefits programs, including 401k, life, health, disability, dental and vision insurance.
- Annual bonus potential.
Physical requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
