Embedded Platform & Bring-Up Engineer
Indexed description
Join one of the largest industrial security teams and build technology that protects real devices, worldwide.
At NXP’s Competence Center Crypto & Security, we design, build, and deliver end-to-end security — from innovation to architecture to products in the field.
If you’re a security engineer who wants impact, on real life security solutions, we’d love to hear from you.
Owing to the success of our business our department is growing. We are looking for an outstanding Embedded Software Engineer to join the Platform Support group of the Secure Software IP team
This is a Platform Support role. The team does not develop the software library itself — it focuses on platform bring-up and on ensuring the software library builds, runs and can be interacted with across our MCU/MPU product portfolio. You will integrate, port and maintain the bare-metal test operating system (test OS) that serves as the vehicle for exercising the software library on each platform, on both pre-silicon (FPGA/emulation) and post-silicon (real board hardware) targets. This is a hands-on hardware/software integration and platform-enablement role — not library development, application development or manual test execution.
Your Team
The Secure Software IP team is responsible for developing and testing state of the art secure cryptographic libraries protected against physical and logical attacks across all different NXP domains and business lines (payment, identification, mobile, IoT, Automotive, Edge Processing…).
Your Responsibilities
- Port and integrate the bare-metal test OS across different MCU/MPU-based products so that the software library can be built, executed and interacted with on each new platform — bringing targets up from first power-on to a working, validated state.
- Drive pre- and post-silicon bring-up — enable and debug the test firmware on FPGA/emulation platforms before silicon, and on real board hardware after tape-out — with awareness of the full semiconductor product lifecycle.
- Upgrade and maintain the existing test firmware with new features, including the associated build-system evolution (make, cmake, …) and Python-based automation and tooling.
- Own the build environment (make, cmake) and supporting scripts used across platforms, keeping it scalable and maintainable as new products and features are added.
- Set up performance measurement and code-coverage collection on target — using on-chip timers and trace infrastructure to generate and collect coverage and trace reports for the software under test.
- Align with Software and Test architects to determine which testing features and which software-library features should be enabled or disabled for each newly brought-up platform, and to propose and evaluate technical concepts for cross-platform development.
- Support developers and testers on live hardware — debug already-running targets, analyze crashes and platform-related issues, and root-cause failures at the firmware, processor and SoC level.
- Drive Hardware/Software system integration together with the architects, ensuring the functionality of the development and test environments across platforms.
- Provide guidance and training to team members and act as a technical reference within the platform support team.
- Degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Microelectronics Engineering or similar.
- 4+ years of relevant embedded / platform-support experience.
- Proven proficiency in C/C++ and Assembly.
- Hands-on experience in bare-metal / low-level embedded development on microcontroller and microprocessor architectures.
- Awareness of the semiconductor product lifecycle (pre-silicon → tape-out → post-silicon bring-up → production), including bringing up firmware on FPGA/emulation and on real board hardware.
- Ability to read and work from reference manuals, datasheets and board schematics; solid understanding of register maps and memory maps.
- SoC and system-level design knowledge (subsystems, interconnect, boot flow, interrupts, memory) sufficient to debug platform-level issues.
- Ability to debug processor cores (ARM Cortex-M and/or RISC-V) and analyze crashes on running hardware.
- Working knowledge of on-chip peripherals used for performance measurement — e.g. timer IPs, GPIO and the Cortex-M SysTick timer.
- Hands-on experience with one or more low-level debugging tools (e.g., GDB, IAR Embedded Workbench, Keil MDK, OpenOCD) and hardware debug probes (JTAG/SWD).
- Comfortable using lab instruments such as oscilloscopes and/or logic analyzers for hardware-level debugging.
- Good knowledge of ARM CPU architecture, preferably ARM Cortex-M; RISC-V is a strong plus.
- Knowledge of standard bus/communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, …).
- Knowledge of build systems (makefile, cmake) and scripting languages (Python, batch, …).
- Familiarity with multiple toolchains (ARMCC/armclang, IAR, GCC, …).
- Experience with version control workflows (Git/Gerrit).
- Good English communication skills.
- Familiarity with ARM trace architecture (CoreSight, ETM, TPIU) and trace-based tooling (e.g. TRACE32) for code-coverage and trace report generation and collection.
- Basic knowledge of cryptography / cryptographic libraries — helpful for understanding which software-library features to enable per platform, but not a hard requirement.
- Experience with hardware emulation platforms (e.g. Veloce, Palladium, ZeBu) for SoC/IP-level bring-up.
