Engineering Lead
Backend | C# / .NET 8, AWS
Sydney CBD | Hybrid - (Tue-Thu in office)
Package | Up to $200k base + 5% bonus + super
The Opportunity:
Most technical leadership roles force engineers to make a difficult choice. Stay on the tools, keep coding and remain an IC, or take the new title and get bogged down in meetings and one-to-ones.
This role, however, is a true player-coach position.
You'll join one of Australia's largest consumer technology brands, a platform used by millions of people every day.
Behind every logged-in user sits the squad you'll lead: User Platform & Integration. Think user accounts, saved searches, favourite listings, price alerts, notifications, and the integration layer connecting it all to the wider platform.
It's a lean engineering team of 5 with no established engineering lead. You'd come in to shape the technical direction, engineering culture and roadmap from day one.
The Role:
- You'll write code, review code, and set the bar, while leading and mentoring the squad.
- The platform works. The challenge is making it simpler. The event-driven architecture has grown more complex than it needs to be, and the job is to reduce that complexity without touching the reliability millions of users depend on.
- There's no dedicated Product Manager on this platform, so you have real influence over both technical direction and delivery priorities, working directly with engineering leadership and the product teams who consume your services.
- Over the next 12 to 24 months, this platform plays a major role in integrating with the parent company's global technology platform. That's a rare chance to influence how core user services evolve at global scale.
- Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, with high visibility across the platform organisation.
Tech Stack:
- C# / .NET 8, ASP.NET Core, AWS, EventBridge, SNS/SQS, DynamoDB, Redis, MySQL/Aurora, serverless compute, infrastructure-as-code.
What You'll Bring:
- Strong hands-on expertise in C# / .NET building distributed, high-traffic backend services
- Deep experience with event-driven and asynchronous integration patterns: pub/sub fan-out, idempotency, retries, dead-letter handling
- Experience designing and operating high-throughput notification, messaging, or data-pipeline systems
- A track record leading and mentoring engineers while staying technically credible
- Experience with AWS, DevOps practices, and CI/CD
- Someone who enjoys improving engineering systems, not just maintaining them
- Customer Data Platforms (Segment, Tealium) or marketing automation (Braze, SFMC)
