The customer is now modernising this environment and introducing a new newsroom Content Management System. Replacing the platform itself is only one part of the challenge: the surrounding data workflows, integrations and downstream applications must continue operating reliably throughout the transition.

As a Senior Backend Developer, you will work at the heart of this transformation. You will maintain and improve the SQL and SSIS-based data layer, optimise performance and ensure that reliable, validated data continues to support .NET APIs and connected systems.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll:

• Design, develop and optimise SQL databases for performance and scalability.
• Develop, update and maintain SSIS packages supporting ETL processes.
• Implement appropriate data validation, logging and error handling.
• Improve data-processing workflows and underlying data models.
• Support the data consumed by .NET APIs and connected applications.
• Test SQL queries, stored procedures, SSIS packages and .NET components.
• Conduct unit, integration and data-validation testing.
• Diagnose and resolve database and ETL performance issues.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment practices.
• Apply Infrastructure as Code and security best practices.
• Work collaboratively within an Agile/Scrum engineering environment.
• Partner with frontend, backend and platform colleagues throughout delivery.

What kind of background works well in this role

We’re looking for a senior engineer with deep SQL and SSIS expertise who understands how reliable data engineering supports wider application environments.

You’ll likely bring:

• At least five years of backend-development experience.
• Strong, recent experience working with SQL and SSIS.
• Expert knowledge of SQL Server and T-SQL.
• Experience developing stored procedures and designing indexes.
• Strong query-optimisation and database-performance-tuning skills.
• Hands-on SSIS package development and automation experience.
• Experience implementing logging, validation and error handling within SSIS.
• Professional experience working with .NET.
• Experience testing SQL queries, stored procedures, SSIS packages and .NET components.
• A strong understanding of ETL design and optimisation.
• Familiarity with Git and modern version-control practices.
• Exposure to CI/CD and deployment tooling such as Terraform, TeamCity or Octopus Deploy.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Confident English communication skills.

Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial:

• Google Cloud Platform
• BigQuery or Cloud Storage
• GCP services used as data sources for SSIS
• Data workflows supporting analytical or machine-learning model updates
• Docker or Kubernetes
• Containerised ETL workloads
