Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Cambridgeshire

Salary: Competitive, dependent upon experience


Newman Stewart is partnering with a specialist technology business to recruit an Embedded Software Engineer.


Our client develops integrated hardware and software products used within complex technical environments, combining embedded software, hardware and system-level functionality within a technically focused product engineering environment.


Job Summary


Operating within Linux environments, the Embedded Software Engineer will contribute to the development and implementation of embedded applications, real-time software and supporting system components. Responsibilities include designing, developing and maintaining embedded software, supporting software optimisation, debugging and the delivery of new functionality across an established product range.


Working closely with software, hardware and system test engineers, the position supports the investigation and resolution of technical issues across embedded systems, contributing to software quality, reliability and performance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain embedded software supporting Linux-based systems and applications.
  • Contribute to the development of real-time applications and supporting software components.
  • Support the implementation, testing and debugging of embedded software across complex product environments.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues across software, operating system and hardware boundaries.
  • Support the development and debugging of Linux device drivers and associated system components.
  • Work closely with software, hardware and system test engineers to deliver new functionality aligned with product development priorities.
  • Contribute to testing, troubleshooting and software optimisation activities, supporting software quality, stability and performance.
  • Maintain high standards of software quality, reliability and maintainability within a collaborative engineering environment.


Experience & Background


The successful candidate will bring demonstrable experience in embedded C programming within Linux environments, with a strong understanding of software development for resource-constrained embedded systems. Experience building multi-threaded and multi-process applications, developing and debugging Linux device drivers, and working within embedded Linux environments will also be relevant.


They will demonstrate strong debugging capability, an analytical and structured approach to solving complex technical problems, and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams. Attention to detail and a commitment to developing high-quality embedded software will also be essential.
