Work mode: Hybrid - 3 days weekly from office
Skills: Java, JavaScript, Python, Grafana, InfluxDB, DevOps and Agile principles.
We at Coforge are looking for Backend Engineer in Sheffield, UK.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who thrives at the intersection of platform engineering and developer experience. You will become the crucial link between infrastructure and development — understanding pain points, designing elegant solutions, and shipping tools that make other engineers faster and happier.
What You'll Do
- Partner with Product Owners to deeply understand requirements and break them down into focused, deliverable items.
- Design and build robust, scalable microservices with high observability and supportability, following DevOps and Agile principles.
- Own your deliverables end-to-end — from design through deployment — and hit agreed timelines.
- Provide rapid, effective production support; perform root cause analysis on incidents and drive long-term fixes that stick.
- Act as a trusted technical consultant for platform users, resolving queries and unblocking teams with speed and clarity.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional IT teams and coordinate stakeholder activities to keep the platform evolving.
- Proactively manage technical debt and keep security and vulnerability posture sharp.
- Mentor junior developers, share knowledge generously, and champion a high-performing team culture.
What You'll Need to Succeed
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or technical lead role focused on DevOps, Platform Engineering, or SRE.
- Solid understanding of how the internet and HTTP work under the hood — DNS, TLS, load balancing, reverse proxies, service meshes, and API gateways — and how these come together in modern microservice architectures.
- Strong programming ability (structured and OOP) in one or more of: Java, JavaScript, Python, or Clojure.
- Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana and InfluxDB; familiarity with time-series databases and data visualisation concepts.
- A proactive mindset — you spot problems, performance bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities before they become urgent.
- Proven experience managing critical production incidents under pressure.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new technologies and drive self-development and knowledge sharing within the team.
Nice to Have
- Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix systems and networking fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience with KVM/VMware virtualisation.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
