Software Development Manager

The Software Development Manager oversees software engineers and technical staff, ensuring teams have the tools, infrastructure, and leadership needed to deliver high‑quality software on schedule. This role shapes and enforces enterprise‑wide engineering standards, drives operational excellence, and serves as a key liaison between development teams, business partners, governance committees, and external stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
- Lead all aspects of staff management, including hiring, performance reviews, coaching, counseling, and terminations when necessary.
- Establish mentoring, training, and professional development pathways to ensure staff maintain the skills required for success.
- Foster a collaborative, engaging work environment that supports employee satisfaction and retention.
Operational & Financial Management
- Develop and execute an annual operational plan aligned with corporate strategy.
- Prepare, defend, and manage annual budgets, ensuring expenditures remain within approved limits.
- Maintain appropriate resource levels through strategic staffing and outsourcing within fiscal constraints.
Engineering Standards, Processes & Governance
- Collaborate with IT Software Development and Testing leadership to define, implement, and continuously improve engineering standards, policies, and procedures.
- Monitor compliance and drive consistency across all development teams.
- Coordinate cross‑team activities to eliminate duplicate efforts and promote shared solutions.
- Participate in IT governance committees by providing resource estimates, feasibility assessments, and guidance on buy‑vs‑build decisions.
Project & Team Support
- Support ongoing software development initiatives by ensuring teams have effective project management, development, testing, deployment, and monitoring practices in place.
- Partner with other managers and supervisors to maintain high‑performing development teams and smooth project execution.
- Use feedback from support teams and end‑users to improve system functionality, reliability, and performance.
Technical Strategy & Innovation
- Stay current on emerging technologies and evaluate their long‑term value and applicability to organizational needs.
- Provide technical direction and recommendations for new tools, platforms, and architectures.
- Rapidly acquire knowledge of newly adopted technologies to support successful implementation.
Additional Duties
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support organizational and departmental goals.
Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree or better in Computer Science or related field
- Master's Degree or better in Computer Science or related field
Required Experience
- Ten (10) years of relevant and current Information Technology experience
- Five (5) years of Supervisory experience with multiple direct reports
- Demonstrated management and leadership skills, including: Willingness and ability to collaborate across IT and business units; Proactively communicates with all levels of the organization; Strategic thinking (solves problems for the entire organization)
Preferred
- Advanced degree in computer, business, healthcare, or related field
