The ideal candidate is highly organized, analytical, collaborative, and passionate about improving processes through technology and automation.

About the Role

The Business Analyst, Automation plays a critical role in ensuring automation initiatives succeed before development begins. Working closely with attorneys, business stakeholders, Innovation, IT, and Legal Operations teams, this position is responsible for analyzing business processes, documenting requirements, identifying opportunities for automation, and delivering implementation-ready specifications that support scalable automation solutions.

This role serves as a bridge between business needs and technology delivery, ensuring automation efforts are grounded in real-world legal workflows, clearly defined requirements, and measurable business value.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and document legal and business workflows to identify automation opportunities.
  • Gather, validate, and document business requirements for automation initiatives.
  • Conduct process discovery and workflow mapping sessions with attorneys and business stakeholders.
  • Develop clear, accurate, and implementation-ready requirements and specifications.
  • Partner with Innovation, Technology, Legal Operations, and other teams to support automation projects.
  • Ensure requirements accurately reflect attorney workflows, matter lifecycles, and business processes.
  • Support process optimization initiatives that improve efficiency, consistency, and user experience.
  • Maintain documentation standards and best practices for process analysis and requirements management.
  • Use process and operational data to identify inefficiencies, validate opportunities, and measure automation outcomes.
  • Facilitate stakeholder discussions to clarify business objectives, requirements, and success criteria.
  • Ensure automation initiatives begin with validated, well-defined business requirements and clearly documented processes.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in business analysis, process improvement, legal operations, automation, or a related field.
  • Experience analyzing and documenting workflows, business processes, or technology initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with attorneys, practice group leaders, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience gathering, validating, and documenting business requirements for automation or technology-driven initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to use process and operational data to identify inefficiencies, validate opportunities, and measure outcomes.

Required Skills & Capabilities

  • Business process analysis and workflow documentation.
  • Requirements gathering, validation, and management.
  • Ability to translate business needs into clear, structured, testable, and implementation-ready requirements.
  • Strong process improvement and operational analysis skills.
  • Familiarity with workflow analysis, automation concepts, and process discovery methodologies.
  • Understanding of Agile, hybrid, or iterative delivery models.
  • Ability to work effectively alongside automation engineers, solution architects, and technology teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Understanding of legal workflows, matter lifecycles, and professional services environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while balancing speed, clarity, and precision.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills in risk-sensitive legal environments.
  • Ability to take ownership of analysis outcomes, not simply produce documentation.
  • Confidence and credibility when partnering with attorneys and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to challenge ambiguous or poorly defined requests and drive requirements clarity.
  • Commitment to ensuring automation initiatives begin with validated, well-defined business requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a law firm, legal operations, or legal technology environment.
  • Paralegal, legal operations, or other legal industry background.
  • Experience supporting automation, workflow, RPA, orchestration, or AI-enabled initiatives.
  • Familiarity with legal technology platforms, including document management systems, matter management systems, and related technologies.
  • Exposure to AI-assisted automation use cases and emerging legal technologies.
  • Experience supporting organizational change management initiatives.
  • Experience working across multiple offices, departments, or geographically dispersed teams.
  • Experience within an Am Law firm or large professional services organization.
