Project Delivery Engineer

Monday you’re in a workshop with a navy customer, turning what they actually need into a mission our constellations can deliver. Wednesday you pull a shift in the R&D room at our HQ, running tests, debugging, making sure the integration work matches what you promised. Friday you’re writing the plan that gets ten robots, four crates of kit under export licence to the other side of an ocean, and when there’s a hiccup, you’re the one who catches and solves it.

We make the ocean’s eyes & ears - we tell people what’s happening on the 70% of our globe taken up by our oceans. We do this with C-Star constellations, swarms of one-metre, wind-and-solar robots that sail the open ocean. Ours is the only surface robot to sail into a Category 5 hurricane and come back with the data. We design and build them in Plymouth and deploy them for the US Government, the Royal Navy, and climate scientists, giving information across an ocean the modern world depends on and currently can’t see.

If we succeed, navies will find dark ships and underwater threats before they reach critical infrastructure. Governments will predict hurricanes and other extreme weather earlier. Scientists will better understand how the ocean and climate are changing.

The people joining now will shape both the technology and the company. Very few engineers get to take something from an idea in the workshop to a real mission in the Atlantic, and know they helped achieve something nobody had done before. Here, you can.

You’re an engineer who owns customer programmes end to end: scoping, planning, integration, delivery, and the relationship itself. You are the technical face of Oshen to defence customers, government scientists and offshore survey teams - you’re credible in the meeting room because you understand the C-Star robots, and useful in the workshop because you do too. You’ll travel to customer sites in the UK and internationally, and between programmes you’ll muck in with everything else at Oshen HQ.

• Technically strong. You don’t live in your spreadsheets and project plans and have another engineer deliver the work, you have the engineering ability to crack on and do it yourself.
• An excellent communicator: you talk to customers, suppliers, engineers and leadership, balance competing priorities, and communicate in a way that makes sense to each group.
• Organised: you build plans that help people, you set up processes to save the company time, but you don’t like process for process’s sake.
• High agency: when something threatens the programme, you see it early and fix it without being asked. You’ll spot and put out five fires over a week, because you care deeply about the project, and nobody will even see you doing it.
• Calm when it goes wrong (it often will) and able to adapt fast.

Our goal of fundamentally changing our understanding of the oceans with thousands of eyes and ears is worthwhile but difficult - there’s a reason nobody has achieved this before. It’ll be a team of close knit people who work hard towards a common goal that achieves this. Sometimes, there’ll be long hours, tense crisis management with teammates as a sensor breaks or a C-Star shipment is derailed.
