General Engineer

Work on the robots that sail into hurricanes and survive Arctic freezes. We can’t tell you precisely what you’ll be working on in six months, because we don’t know yet. You might design the new sensor that makes C-Star constellations dominant at detecting and classifying vessels. You might build the constellation control software that optimises C-Stars for solar charging. You might lead a complete concept upwards design of a new class of robot. Either way, you’ll be working on robots that get thrown into and tested in some of the harshest environments on earth, for customers doing everything from forecasting devastating hurricanes to tracking Russian dark ships.

We make the ocean’s eyes & ears - we tell people what’s happening on the 70% of our globe taken up by our oceans. We do this with C-Star constellations, swarms of one-metre, wind-and-solar robots that sail the open ocean. Ours is the only surface robot to sail into a Category 5 hurricane and come back with the data. We design and build them in Plymouth and deploy them for the US Government, the Royal Navy, and climate scientists, giving information across an ocean the modern world depends on and currently can’t see.

If we succeed, navies will find dark ships and underwater threats before they reach critical infrastructure. Governments will predict hurricanes and other extreme weather earlier. Scientists will better understand how the ocean and climate are changing.

The people joining now will shape both the technology and the company. Very few engineers get to take something from an idea in the workshop to a real mission in the Atlantic, and know they helped achieve something nobody had done before. Here, you can.

• Engineering background essential - likely a degree in an engineering discipline.
• 2-4 years experience preferred, even better if at a fast growing startup.
• Able to get things done without high levels of supervision, with evidence behind this.
• Adaptable: nobody here has done exactly the same role over a two year window, you’ll need to learn fast and adapt.
• A clear communicator. Sure, you don’t wake up excited to write documentation, but you’re able to make sure others understand your work, and that you set processes to future proof your work.
• High agency. A track record of starting things, fixing things, finishing things nobody asked you to do.
• Intense. You want to work hard for something important, difficult things excite you.
• Great if you have maritime or naval experience but not essential.

Our goal of fundamentally changing our understanding of the oceans with thousands of eyes and ears is worthwhile but difficult - there’s a reason nobody has achieved this before. It’ll be a team of close knit people who work hard towards a common goal that achieves this. Sometimes, there’ll be long hours, sometimes tense debugging alongside teammates, and figuring out problems nobody has solved before. If you want a regular job, with fixed hours, carefully laid out development plans, someone to always call on for help, don’t apply.
