Software Engineer

Fifty robots are at sea tonight, spread across two oceans, and one pilot is flying all of them, through software you built. A constellation needs to recluster to map a search area before the weather closes in; the planner that works out how is yours. The data feed a government customer depends on hiccups at 2 a.m.; the pipeline that catches it, reroutes it and fixes it is yours too. Back in Plymouth, software in the factory: tracking every component, configuring every robot, testing each C-Star, - you guessed it, you.

We make the ocean’s eyes & ears - we tell people what’s happening on the 70% of our globe taken up by our oceans. We do this with C-Star constellations, swarms of one-metre, wind-and-solar robots that sail the open ocean. Ours is the only surface robot to sail into a Category 5 hurricane and come back with the data. We design and build them in Plymouth and deploy them for the US Government, the Royal Navy, and climate scientists, giving information across an ocean the modern world depends on and currently can’t see.

If we succeed, navies will find dark ships and underwater threats before they reach critical infrastructure. Governments will predict hurricanes and other extreme weather earlier. Scientists will better understand how the ocean and climate are changing.

Generalist software across everything Oshen does, examples below:

• Improve our mission manager web app to plan, monitor, and debug live robot missions.
• Work with our research engineers to integrate swarm control and autonomy algorithms into reliable backend services with a clear UI layer.
• Implement requests that make our frontend intuitive and responsive, including maps, time‑series data visualisation, and robot control UI.
• Build tools and automations that unblock ops, manufacturing, and field teams.
• Extend our Node.js services, design clear APIs, and maintain good data structures and SQL schemas with solid logging/monitoring for visibility
• Maintain AWS infrastructure for deployments, logs, monitoring, and cost awareness.
• Contribute to embedded/edge work for on‑robot features.

• Software engineering background, including graduates - most important is you're at the forefront of the field, and you know how to bring the right tool to bear; whether that's AI or your solid computer science fundamentals.
• A strong generalist - comfortable from cloud services down to software that talks to hardware over unreliable links: “Jack of all trades, master of some”
• You build things people actually use, and you’d rather ship and iterate with users than polish in private
• You write code that assumes things will fail, because 2,000 miles offshore, they will
• High agency: you find the highest-leverage problem in the company and go after it without being asked
• Maritime experience is a plus but not essential.

Our goal of fundamentally changing our understanding of the oceans with thousands of eyes and ears is worthwhile but difficult - there’s a reason nobody has achieved this before. It’ll be a team of close knit people who work hard towards a common goal that achieves this. Sometimes, there’ll be long hours, sometimes tense debugging alongside teammates, and figuring out problems nobody has solved before.
