Mongolia, the Journey Home | View on Foundation

Landing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, I felt a welcoming like never before, a sense of space and purpose. A visceral feeling, the awareness that my soul had returned. Never before had I felt this way about a journey, for me, travelling is more about the people than the destination. But I had tears rolling down my face on the runway, and I was excited to find out why.

I see now, it was me - time for myself, cut off from the outside world, with no wifi, no phone reception and no electricity I was able just to be. My mind didn’t wander, didn’t falter - I was present. With this omnipresence, I felt that deep connection to the environment, witnessing the sunset whilst realising the futility of mans need to force and change. The sun will always set at the precise time, the seasons of the trees the clouds covering the skies will come and go. There, amongst all this I felt my insignificance to all of life, but in the same breath, I was everything.

My soul was home, but not in the way I first thought, I’d been longing for this journey for so many years, but I see now it was a longing for my soul to be reconnected, to be free from the Vritti’s, the constant mental chatter, the prying eyes - it was to be free...

I was free…

Paeonia Lactiflora - Alexander Fleming | View on Tux

March 2020, we were locked into hibernation, stay at home orders the world over. As a traveling portrait photographer, I was lost. Sitting in the garden with my morning coffee, I watched with wonder, the changing of the seasons, witnessing the resilience of the natural world, to be ever-present. Secure with where they are not wishing for more. But remaining in the present moment.

Slowing down, I was able to see the true beauty of the natural world, that was right here on my doorstep. I turned the greenhouse into a studio and began digging up the flowers to capture this beauty. I wanted to really show the essence, the full structure, as the old Hermetic axiom ’as above so below’, showing that which enables the beauty.

It was also a journey to the self, slowing down, through meditation, being at one with the natural world. I was able to see the parallel between our human existence and that of Mother Nature, one where we must nourish the self from the inside out. Taking those moments of self hibernation, so that we can emerge and grow.

No flowers were harmed during this self-exploration,

They were all replanted and bloomed.
