Senior Data Engineer

About us

Connected Mine builds software for underground and open pit mining operations. We work directly with mine sites, taking the messy reality of production, maintenance, drill and blast, and fleet data and turning it into something operators and engineers actually use to run the mine.

We are a bit over a year old and still under fifteen people. Mining data is a genuinely hard problem: dozens of source systems, none of them built to talk to each other, and nothing off the shelf that solves it. We are building the thing that doesn't exist yet, and we are early enough that most of how it works is still undecided.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to scale up our data pipelines and help stand up our own platform.

Today we ingest from a wide range of mining source systems and deliver reporting and analytics on top of that data. It works, but it has grown deployment by deployment. We want someone to take ownership of the underlying platform: the ingestion layer, the transformation logic, the data models, and the tooling that lets us onboard a new site quickly and reliably instead of rebuilding from scratch each time.

This is a build role. You will be making architectural calls. Sitting inside our software team and working alongside our developers, product and delivery people.

What you will be doing

• Designing and building the data platform that our products run on, from ingestion through to serving layer
• Scaling our existing pipelines: making them faster, more reliable, easier to monitor and cheaper to run
• Building repeatable ingestion patterns for mining source systems so new site deployments are configuration rather than custom work
• Owning the data models and semantic layer that sit behind our reporting products, including how metric logic is defined and reused across clients
• Setting up the operational side properly: orchestration, testing, observability, alerting, lineage and CI/CD for data
• Working with our product and delivery teams to turn site requirements into data that is actually available and trustworthy
• Contributing to data quality, governance and documentation practices as we grow
• Helping lift the data engineering capability of the wider team

What we are looking for

Essential:

• Strong experience building and running production data pipelines, ideally in a product or platform context rather than one-off analytics
• Excellent SQL, including data modelling, transformation and performance tuning
• Solid software engineering fundamentals: version control, testing, code review, CI/CD.
• Experience with dimensional modelling and designing data models that multiple downstream consumers rely on
• Experience with a modern data stack (for example dbt, Airflow or Dagster, Fabric, Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent)
• Python or a similar language for pipeline and tooling work
• Comfort with ambiguity and unclean source data, and the judgement to know when to fix it at the source versus handle it downstream

Nice to have:

• Experience in mining, resources, or another operationally complex industrial environment
• Familiarity with mining source systems such as fleet management, maintenance, planning or scheduling platforms
• Power BI and semantic model experience
• Streaming or near real time data experience
• Experience being an early platform hire and setting technical direction
