Champion Data has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Senior Data Engineer to join our team!

The Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for the ongoing design, development, and optimisation of our cloud data warehouse. This role is suited to an experienced engineer with deep expertise in data modelling, scalable architecture, and performance tuning. Working closely with product, analytics, and business stakeholders, you will drive technical decisions that align our data platform with Champion Data's strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Data Integration: Build and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant data pipelines to ingest and transform data from various sources into our cloud data warehouse.
• Data Modelling: Design and optimise data models that support current analytics needs and anticipate future use cases.
• Cloud Data Warehouse Operations: Lead the operation, monitoring, and performance tuning of our cloud data warehouse platform, ensuring data is accurate, timely, and accessible at scale within cost parameters.
• SQL & Scripting: Write, optimise, and review complex SQL queries and scripts in Python (or similar) to support data transformation, validation, and automation tasks.
• Data Quality & Validation: Enforce data quality standards across the team, implement testing frameworks, and use quality metrics to identify and address gaps proactively.
• Collaboration: Build strong relationships with data analysts, data scientists, engineers, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and drive technical decisions that align with company strategy.
• Documentation: Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation of data architectures, processes, and workflows to support team knowledge sharing and onboarding.
• Mentoring: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, fostering knowledge sharing, team redundancy, and professional growth.

About You

• Minimum of 6 years of experience as a data analyst / engineer
• Deep experience with cloud data warehouses, Snowflake strongly preferred (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
• Strong understanding of data modelling concepts (e.g., dimensional modelling, normalisation, storage and query optimisation).
• Expert proficiency in SQL and at least one other data programming language (e.g., Python, R, Julia).
• Proven experience architecting scalable data pipelines using orchestration frameworks (e.g., Airflow, dbt).
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools for data workflows.
• Passion for, and understanding of AFL and other sports
• Strong experience with data validation and quality frameworks.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
