Your employer: global reach with the influence of a medium-sized company
You will join a medium sized internationally operating energetic technology company in Amsterdam that builds a digital experience around one of humanity’s biggest passions within entertainment.
The platform reaches tens of millions of people worldwide. This gives you the technical scale and impact of a much larger organisation, while working in a medium-sized company where engineers can still directly influence how technology is built and improved.
Behind this global consumer experience sits a modern data platform. Behavioural and product data needs to be processed, enriched and transformed, recommendation models need reliable input and teams throughout the company need access to information they can trust.
Because the organisation works mainly with open-source technology and maintains ownership over its architecture, engineers are not limited to clicking together managed cloud services. You can investigate how systems actually work, improve them and introduce better solutions when you see an opportunity.
You will work in an international environment with more than twenty nationalities. English is the working language and the culture is open, informal and social. People receive considerable freedom, working hours are flexible and there is little micromanagement.
Your role: Medior Data Engineer Amsterdam
You will join a backend team of six engineers and help take the existing data platform to its next technical level.
Because the team is compact, your work will not disappear into a large department. Improvements you make to a pipeline, query or data model can be implemented quickly and have a visible effect across the organisation.
Your focus will be on building and improving ETL processes, Airflow pipelines, analytical data models and production data services. You will investigate how the platform can become faster, more reliable and more cost-efficient by improving query performance, storage, transformations and architecture.
The platform already runs on a modern stack, so you will not spend your time rebuilding an outdated data warehouse. Instead, you can focus on optimisation, technical excellence and exploring new ideas that can move the platform forward.
You will also work closely with machine-learning engineers responsible for personalisation and recommendation models. You help transform raw data into reliable datasets, features, dimensions and data marts.
Because the platform reaches tens of millions of people, better data does not only improve an internal report. It can directly improve how a global audience experiences the product. Another important area is data quality. You get the opportunity to introduce stronger checks and improve how transformations are tested, monitored and traced. This allows teams throughout the company to make decisions using data they can actually trust.
The stack includes Python, Airflow, analytical databases, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes and GCP. Most data-engineering development is done in Python, while Scala is used to a smaller extent.
You do not need experience with every technology in the stack. What matters is that you understand the fundamentals behind analytical databases, data pipelines and distributed systems, and can explain the choices and trade-offs you make.
What we’re looking for
- At least three years of experience within data engineering or software engineering
- Professional experience building ETL processes, batch pipelines or analytical data solutions
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or Scala
- Experience with workflow orchestration, such as Airflow
- Understanding of analytical databases, data modelling and query optimisation
- Interest in understanding how technologies work beneath the abstraction layer
- The ability to work independently and turn ideas into technical improvements
- Strong communication skills and professional fluency in English
- Experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, dbt, data-quality tooling or machine-learning data preparation is considered a plus
What’s on offer
- Salary up to €80.000 gross per year based on experience and impact
- The influence of a medium-sized company combined with a platform reaching tens of millions of people
- Considerable freedom to introduce ideas and improve the data architecture
- 2 working from home days
- Flexible working hours
- 25 holidays
- Pension scheme
- Travel allowance
- MacBook or laptop
- Learning budget of €1,500 every two years
- Daily breakfast and freshly prepared lunch
- International environment with more than twenty nationalities
