Senior Backend Engineer

Job Description

At SimpleSUB Water, we help multifamily and commercial properties reduce water waste and increase NOI with our over-the-pipe water submetering and billing platform. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our team at SimpleSUB Water. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will work closely with a cross-functional team designing, developing, and maintaining our server infrastructure to ensure the seamless delivery of our product and services.

Tech Stack

Our backend systems are primarily built in Python and leverage AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, IoT Core, RDS, and OpenSearch Service. We use Terraform and the Serverless Framework to manage and deploy our infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain reliable backend services, APIs, databases, and data-processing systems.
• Evaluate new product requirements for technical feasibility and estimate implementation costs and timelines.
• Monitor service performance, troubleshoot production issues, implement improvements, and participate in technical incident response.
• Review code, document technical decisions, and help establish backend engineering standards.
• Follow security best practices to protect backend infrastructure and customer data.
• Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve backend architecture and infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Five or more years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on backend systems or cloud infrastructure.
• Strong proficiency in Python and experience developing production-grade applications.
• Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs and service integrations.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, NoSQL databases, and data modeling.
• Experience with automated testing, source control, and continuous integration and deployment practices.
• Understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous processing, and event-driven architectures.
• Ability to independently assess, prioritize, and manage tasks effectively in a dynamic environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, RDS, OpenSearch Service, and CloudWatch.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, search databases, analytics pipelines, or large-scale data-processing systems.
• Experience managing infrastructure as code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools.
• Experience designing secure authentication, authorization, and secrets-management systems.
• Experience optimizing cloud systems for performance, reliability, scalability, and cost.
• Familiarity with IoT platforms, connected-device systems, or high-volume telemetry data.
