Backend Software Engineer

Most backend roles are about building another API.

This one is about building the platform behind complex, business-critical systems.

We’re recruiting a Backend Software Engineer in Melbourne to design and build scalable cloud software across distributed services, APIs, databases, infrastructure, and application orchestration.

You’ll work on systems that need to remain reliable as complexity, data volume, and operational demands increase.

The work includes:

• Building scalable backend services in Golang, Ruby on Rails, or Django

• Designing secure REST and GraphQL APIs

• Developing workflow, orchestration, and event-processing services

• Designing and optimising SQL and NoSQL databases

• Deploying cloud-native applications across AWS or GCP

• Building containerised environments using Docker and Kubernetes

• Improving system performance, resilience, observability, and maintainability

• Contributing to architecture, design reviews, testing, CI/CD, and technical documentation

This role is not just about writing endpoints and closing tickets.

You’ll be expected to think about service boundaries, failure modes, data consistency, performance bottlenecks, deployment risks, and what happens when a distributed system behaves differently in production than it did during testing.

We’re looking for someone with:

• 5+ years of backend software engineering experience

• Strong experience building scalable cloud applications

• Commercial experience with Golang, Rails, or Django

• Strong API and database design skills

• Experience with distributed systems and cloud-native architecture

• Practical AWS or GCP experience

• Docker and Kubernetes experience

• Strong debugging and performance optimisation skills

Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor is also useful, provided you understand the architecture and can validate the code being produced.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Melbourne.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technical leaders, influence the architecture of large-scale systems, and build software that solves real engineering and operational problems.
