Backend Software Engineer

My client is an Australian technology company developing advanced software-driven systems for complex real-world applications. As they continue to expand, they are seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join a highly collaborative engineering team responsible for delivering innovative software solutions from development through to deployment.

The Role

Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer, you will take ownership of the services, APIs and data infrastructure that power the platform. Working alongside a dedicated Frontend Developer and the broader engineering team, you'll help deliver reliable systems from design through to deployment.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and building backend services using frameworks such as Golang, Ruby on Rails or Django.
• Designing, implementing and maintaining secure, well-documented APIs (RESTful or GraphQL).
• Designing and optimising database schemas and queries across SQL and/or NoSQL systems.
• Deploying, monitoring and managing services in cloud environments (AWS or GCP) using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Writing unit, integration and end-to-end tests, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines.
• Profiling and refactoring code to improve performance and reduce technical debt.
• Collaborating with frontend engineers, product managers and designers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Contributing to secure coding standards and participating in peer code reviews.
• Maintaining technical documentation, including API references and system diagrams.
• Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

Your Background

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

• 5+ years' hands-on experience in backend software development.
• Strong experience with a modern backend framework such as Golang, Ruby on Rails or Django.
• Solid understanding of relational and/or non-relational databases.
• Proven experience designing, building and maintaining secure, scalable APIs.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and containerisation tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Strong debugging skills and experience optimising application performance.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.

Experience in any of the following would be highly regarded:

• AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Cursor.
• Working in Automotive, Robotics, Advanced Manufacturing. 
• Strong knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and associated best practice.
