The Role
Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer, you will take ownership of the services, APIs and data infrastructure that power the platform. Working alongside a dedicated Frontend Developer and the broader engineering team, you'll help deliver reliable systems from design through to deployment.Your responsibilities will include:
- Designing and building backend services using frameworks such as Golang, Ruby on Rails or Django.
- Designing, implementing and maintaining secure, well-documented APIs (RESTful or GraphQL).
- Designing and optimising database schemas and queries across SQL and/or NoSQL systems.
- Deploying, monitoring and managing services in cloud environments (AWS or GCP) using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Writing unit, integration and end-to-end tests, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines.
- Profiling and refactoring code to improve performance and reduce technical debt.
- Collaborating with frontend engineers, product managers and designers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Contributing to secure coding standards and participating in peer code reviews.
- Maintaining technical documentation, including API references and system diagrams.
- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
To be successful in this role, you will possess:
- 5+ years' hands-on experience in backend software development.
- Strong experience with a modern backend framework such as Golang, Ruby on Rails or Django.
- Solid understanding of relational and/or non-relational databases.
- Proven experience designing, building and maintaining secure, scalable APIs.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP) and containerisation tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Strong debugging skills and experience optimising application performance.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
- AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Cursor.
- Working in Automotive, Robotics, Advanced Manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and associated best practice.
